I've been playing since December 2012, am at level 35, have all the land, all the buildings, a nice reserve of cash, and I haven't had to have a house farm to do it. I didn't understand what house farming was until I added friends for Whacking Day. Personally, I don't understand why anyone plays the game just to collect the stuff and not build a town that makes sense. I added more friends for this event, but deleted any with farms instantly, especially if they were at level 34 or 35.
I'd rather have friends at lower levels who can at least see what the potential of a SF can be when they visit me, instead of just seeing house farms and crazy crammed-up towns. One (former) friend had a huge town with only one square of pavement. So all the characters were in one pavement square. Convenient, huh? Also totally nuts. The other thing that drives me as crazy as house farms are massive flower beds that look like magic eye paintings...
I have a friend like the one you describe and I can tell you it was amazing for Whacking Day when you didn't have to go looking for the snakes. I have a small blue house farm on the northern strip of my town, so unfortunately we can't be friends.
