If you place the craftable canal buildings next to a river it creates a sidewalk.

What an interesting idea.

Just as a side note, once you have placed the gondola and put the building in to get the sidewalk, you can then remove the water. The sidewalk remains and the gondola floats in a small pool of water. Not that you would feel safe leaving it in this condition, but cool none the less.
