Not useless really, you can buy tokens from the main entrance.
Do have to get to a certain point in the Krustyland questline before you can do that? Because I'm not seeing that option... I'm on "The Krusty-est Place on Earth" Part 17, when Comic Book Guy is visiting the Gift Shop.
It appears so, I was unaware of this until you mentioned it. I assumed it was always there.
