Also OP another strategy is to check your town hall

After I uninstalled/reinstalled, I tried your advice. I sped Kang up, and it worked. They had melded into one. Now they are separate again. Thank you.

That's what happens when you send them on their joint 10hr task "Exchange Long Protein Strings". They look almost like one character.
