Well, I don't know. I went to put eggs to my friends' towns and when I came back to mine all my snakes were gone. I managed to find one more and whack it, but 46 snakes just poofed and I haven't gotte...

The problem I see with this is that if you are not playing for a few hours, your town will reach its maximum # of free-roaming snakes... So then where do the 5 freed snakes go? I certainly have not come back to my town to find more than 50.
