Unfortunately, Minimum Wage IS a joke.
And raising it isn't going to help. When I started working in college Minimum Wage was $3.35 an hour. Then it went up a little bit and I had a little more money every week... And then the price of everything I bought crept up until I wasn't any better off than I was before.
Each time Minimum Wage crept up a little the prices quickly crept up to match - each time faster than before. By the time the last such raise hit my paycheck they'd already raised the prices in anticipation to compensate.
