I have the impression that they put this function only because of the land limit / item limit. Now we hesitate less to remove an area that we like, because it is kept identically in the inventory. So if it's less disturbing to store an area, it compensates for land and item limits. I don't know if they have done this new function just for that, but it can help us when we have these limits.
