The best method I have seen is to have the kid who tells the story continue to retell the story (ex. Millhouse for bunnies). That way you can tell what the town is spawning by who is telling the story at the campfire. This is what I use if the story is being told when I visit each neighbor.
After 4 hours the story teller pops out with the rest of the kids in the visited town. So if I'm asleep and it's been more than 4 hours since I started the cycle they won't see anything.
Tomorrow I'll be gone all day. So whatever I start will be the Nightmare until I get back in the evening.
