i want to leave my town undefended BUT does anyone know if the KL glitch that wipes out the shields has been fixed?

Yeah, they'll need to fix the Krustyland glitch before I stop defending.
(Of course, I haven't been able to log on today, so I guess my town is temporarily undefended.)
