I haven't had this issue, have you tried taping the trick or treat bag at the top right hand corner when they are ready? (It shows an exclamation point when ready)
I do that because no matter where they run off to its quick. I still have two more levels to unlock before i can purchase the ship, but we still have a few weeks to go. I hope it works out for you!!!
