Just my two cents ... Maybe offer them but don't "unlock" them until the final level? Maybe even add a special "Quest" to that level ... Something that would take a lot of effort for each "discontinued" item. I don't favor restricting all the little gewgaws to donuts, but you could put the imaginary dollar amount high. That decision is obviously not mine to make, but just an opinion.
It takes a certain amount of loyalty to the game (and a truckload of tapping!) to get to the top level. so it might be a decent compromise. Some of us simply didn't have the technology to play until recently. So we could compromise -- Those who arrive late have to work A LOT harder if they really want something. Vintage items cost more in real life, but we have the option to pay a slew of money if we want them.
