i personally find it funny that Mr. Burns doesn't relise he's gay my favorite quote between them is:

Smithers: People like dogs, Mr. Burns.

Well, part of the problem is that being "out" now and 20 years ago gives a fairly different context the to general obliviousness of the situation.

Edit: not that one context is less funny or poignant than another - that'll be a matter of opinion, it's just that characters who don't age present some consistency problems.
