I dont think customised signs is a good idea as it would give people the opportunity to write abusive messages, if they done the boards so it had "set" messages that would be better.
I always thought a good idea would be able to leave messages via the Mail office building, so when someone leaves you a "set" message a little envelope would hover over the building to let you know someone left you a letter :)
