I thought it looked more like Jacques Cousteau's submarine (which may, itself, be based on the Beatles one.)
From what I remember about the song, it was originally just supposed to be a simple children's melody... teaching them colors and what not. Yellow submarine, sky of blue, sea of green.. etc. Over time, it evolved into a commentary on their insular lives.
