No, it is not necessary.

Perhapes I just did it wrongly but defended a building which was only under attack with a cheater earlier and it made no difference and did not complete the defend a building task.

I tried that but even when the screen turned white and my number of cheaters going down by one, for some reason I still haven't completed the task and it has cost me 3 cheaters as well. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there a glich?

It's driving me mad too. I want to complete that task. Hope it's not holding up a task by not being completed.

ya.. hopefully someone from EA sees this thread.. its def a bug...

Same problem for me guys, but judging by the lack of response to the 'Princess and the Pea' bug which I also have in KL, I wouldn't hold your breath for them fixing this one either. A bug won't let me place balloons to complete a task in Krustyland, and now a bug is stopping me from completing 'defend your town' task. Will be changing games soon. ???

When you are under attack go first to the quest screen. The "do it" button will be there for the "defend town using a cheater" quest.
