Early Ways to gain Donuts

What are some good / the best ways to gain Donuts early on in the game? I know later on you can use the KEM strategy once you have the income and XP Collider but for now do you just rely on Level ups and quest rewards - assuming you're not going to spend $$?

Also what's the best use of Donuts early on? Premium Characters? Mystery Box? Vault?
