No- your gold total will not decrease. Gold is cumulative and cannot go down

It takes 4000 gold to unlock Boxingham Palace (which has now been built), yet on every single menu that shows my gold totals I have way less than this as I upgraded Homer!
Simple, it only costs 1400 gold to unlock Boxingham. You just misread it.
The easy way to figure it out is look at your gold level, hit "upgrade", and see if it reduced your gold. Do it now since it's early and if it does deplete (I promise it won't) you'll have plenty of time to get it back. Besides, the upgrades are part of the quest line, so you'll have to do them anyway if you want to progress.
