Might be also worth with the "missing friends" bug to add that it also occurs if any of your friends haven't updated recently (although with people clearing friend lists for xmas this may be a minor problem), none of your friends will appear at all.
The difference with the other bug is that the origin button will still show up on your friends screen, and you will still see a full friends list through origin but no other towns!
I solved it simply by deleting anyone who hadn't updated past 6th december (around 20 of my friends lol, I hadn't played in a while)
Again I doubt many people will get this problem as they have all cleared friends lists completely recently, but it took me ages to find anything on the forum
