career new moves - when do they get applied?

Can someone tell me when you actually learn new moves within the weekly career mode options please?

i.e,

I'm not sure if you get to use the moves you're trying to unlock just by spending your points and starting the session. As in they'd be available to use to complete what's being asked of you for the drill. I want to use a learning/training partner to get a head kick that's a high level but don't currently have one available to equip so I'm not sure if I'd be wasting the weekly points in trying to "knock an opponent down with a head kick in ... amount of time" without actually having a head kick move. I'm wondering if it will like give me a base level 1 move to at least use, and then reward me with the higher level rank move upon passing the requirements.
