Qualifying Yellow-Flag Boost Mode Bug

Platform: Xbox Series X (But all platform bug)
Game mode: Online Lobby / Multiplayer
Weekend format: Short Qualifying and 50% Race

Bug description:
In online lobbies during qualifying sessions if a driver comes across a yellow flag mini sector any driver in the yellow zone loses Boost mode until clear of yellow flag or if green flag is waved.  We have seen this multiple times in our league racing environment, and the issue occurred repeatedly from multiple drivers.  This was flagged by another league and FYI'd ours and confirm the same bug.

Expected behavior:
Boost Mode NOT lost for any driver on track during qualifying sessions. Boost mode should stay active throughout qualifying session.

Actual behavior:
Any time a driver causes a yellow flag, accident, spin, slowing/allowing hot lappers through, or run out of fuel, any other driver in the yellow sector loses boost mode compromising hot laps.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create or join an online lobby.
  2. Select any format for qualifying
  3. In qualifying session have 1 car drive slow to produce yellow or stop (not causing DNF) and have other cars note battery mode while driving through yellow flag sectors.

This can cause unfair sporting situations in online races, especially in league racing, because drivers on hot laps can lose access to boost mode that can affect the grid correctly.  Drivers can game the system to stop other drivers from setting expected lap times.

Code for my example: CVRH-MMLP-VHVH-JCLJ

Clip 1: note my position and yellow flag.  Boost mode goes away in yellow flag, then goes back to boost mode with green flag.

The yellow flag is a signal of danger.

During Free Practice and Qualifying, it must be evident that a driver has not attempted to set a meaningful lap time.

And that's probably why the game forces such a slowdown by not using boost mode during yellow flags. This prevents anyone from achieving a good time during a yellow flag. In real F1, there's a penalty for doing so (e.g., having your lap time canceled). In real-life races, there are many situations that make it difficult to achieve a fast time in qualifying: track congestion, a change in weather to rain, yellow and red flags, and in Canada, even whistling (damage to the Williams car), poorly installed manholes...

The game tries to be realistic.

understood but in F1 25 game, same conditions, this scenario does not trigger a performance drop by the game.  Even in real F1 yellow flags are not typically waived for cars yielding for other cars, maybe a blue flag is waived, but the game lumps all slow moving or stopped traffic as yellow flags.  Only the DLC is there a performance change by battery mode changing.

The game should have a WHITE flag to indicate that a car is moving slowly in front of you. There should also be a red flag in practice and qualifying (and a penalty for triggering it in qualifying). Of course, in real F1, there's no prohibition against using boost mode under a yellow flag, but you should clearly slow down. That's probably why the game uses this WORKAROUND.

I agree with you that boost mode should be available under a yellow flag, but the time achieved under the yellow flag should be invalid. That would be the most realistic and compliant with the regulations.

I wonder what EA will do about this?

  • I believe i mistakenly called it boost mode instead of overtake mode.  but issue/comments the same

The game should also give a warning (black/white flag) for driving too slowly (like Hulkenberg and Russell did in the qualifying of the Barcelona GP 2026), and if someone does it again, they will receive a penalty.
