Route tree drills are impossible; QB drops ball when incoming ball timer ends.

I've tried as a WR as well as HB. I've tried in two different game modes: Superstar and Franchise. So I tried three characters total, a Franchise HB and a Superstar HB plus WR. I did not have any control over the QB on any of these; I can't even call for the ball. I've pressed every button on my controller both before and after the incoming ball timer ends, and no matter what I do or where I'm at on the field, he just drops the ball where he's standing, and I fail the drill. I would say maybe I'm not running the routes right, but when I'm in an actual game, I get nothing but good, great, or perfect route running. Also, with how many attempts I've done by now, I would like to think I've run the route good enough at least one time. I know EA doesn't care about the quality of their games, but I can't find anyone else who has had this issue online, and I was hoping someone here knew if I'm doing something wrong or if EA just sucks.

I'm playing on pc with an Xbox controller. Downloaded on the EA Play app with a game pass subscription.

I've noticed my keyboard and mouse controls say E is to call for the ball, but the controller controls don't even have a call for ball button. When I try it with keyboard and mouse, he still won't throw it. Pressing E does nothing both before and after the incoming ball timer ends.
