Opening map makes other players invisible

I see other players around me... then i open map so i can mark a challenge i want to go after, after exiting map all other players are invisible. I can still here the sound of skating and grinding from the other players but I cant see them.

Doing and completing a challenge seems to make them all reappear but once i check the map its back to them all being invisible.

maybe clues to solve this bug:

#1- This all only started after I completed the latest quest missions with the voiced characters showing us the new tricks and hand plants.

#2- I sometimes see random bearings icons at the edge of the screen, once i center my view to look toward them they disappear. this might indicate the game thinks im still doing a mission/challenge and put me in the state where other players are supposed to be invisible during a mission/challenge (but i'm not in a mission/challenge).
