went to edit a sim that aged to teen, every sim in household changed name to the same as first sim and whole family corrupted and turned solid black in gameplay. will have to delete whole family

Why do you have to delete the family? Just Exit to Main Menu or Exit Game, without saving. If you've already saved, then restore one of the backup saves from the Load Game screen. That should solve the immediate problem by taking you back to a save where you haven't messed things up yet.
a bit late, wasn't a main family so I just deleted. more concerned that it will happen again but if it happens to a main family I probably will go to previous save
