I am ready to fight mother plant, have vaccinated and recruited 3 sims friends; when I try and lead them down the first hallway with spores, all 3 vaccinated sims start coughing, return to clear area...

That is annoying. The spores should clear from the hallway after making past that.
The teammates should appear there if you begin the fight. I'd suggest save first and then try it without having them on the lot.
I went ahead and cheated to complete by get functioning hazmat suits in DEBUG for 3 sims. All were able to walk thru hallways and defeat Mother Plant.
