This article gives you an overview of commonly used terms around the Sims 4 forum
A
B
- Backup: Copy of a file/folder to recover lost data later. More details can be found here: Backups
- Bug: Error in the game (smaller bugs are often called glitches).
C
- Cache files: Files where information is stored for faster processing. These files are created anew if deleted.
- ConfigOverride: Folder where you can put edited copies of certain config files so they don't get reverted during an update or repair.
- Crash to Desktop (CTD): When your game closes without warning.
- Create-a-Sim (CAS): Game mode where you create your characters.
- Create-a-Date (CAD): Custom Dates you can create with The Sims 4 Lovestruck
- Custom Content (CC): Third-party content for your game. Custom content typically comes as .package files.

- Download: A file or program you add to your computer from the internet.
- Downloadable Content (DLC): Refers to EA-released packs and other official content you can add to your game.
- DxDiag: Windows program that gives information about your computer. A .txt file can be exported for troubleshooting help.

- EP: Expansion pack

- Gallery: Online exchange where you can upload your sims/lots/rooms and download creations from other players.
- GP: Game pack

- Household: All Sims that live together in one house/apartment, or a group of sims saved as one item in your Library or on the Gallery.

- iCloud: Apple service that syncs your data with cloud (online) storage.
- Installation folder: Folder where your game is installed. This is determined while installing the game. The path depends on your settings in EA app or Steam.

- LastCrash: Log files the game writes if your game crashes to the desktop.
- LastException (LE): Log file the game generates if it encounters an error.
- LastUIException (LUIE): Log file the game generates if it encounters a UI error.
- (Game) Launcher: Platform where you install/launch and manage your games such as EA app, Steam, Epic Launcher, etc.
- Library: Your collection of saved households/builds/rooms that you've created or downloaded from the Gallery. This is only stored on your computer.
- Log/Log Files: Protocol of what happened.

- Mods: 3rd party content that changes the behavior of your game.

- OneDrive: Microsoft service that syncs your data with cloud (online) storage.
P/Q
- Patch: Update of the game that usually helps remove bugs.
- Plumbob: Green/yelllow/red ‘thing’ that hangs above the active sim. The Sims trademark.
- Queue: List of orders you give your Sims. Can be seen on the left-hand side of your screen.
R
- RabbitHole: Building where you can’t see the inside or places Sims just disappear to.
- Registry: Part of Windows. All important stuff concerning your OS is stored here. See Wiki.
- Repair: EA App/Steam function to return the game's installed files to an unaltered state. More details can be found here: Repair Game.
S
- Save game: The current state of you game when it was saved last.
- Script Mods: Mods written in Python (Sims 4). These files usually have a .ts4script file extension but often have accompanying .package files that need to be installed as well. You need to turn on script mods in your game options for them to run properly.
- SP: Stuff pack
T
- Tray: Folder in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 that contains all the lots, Sims and rooms you saved to your local library.
- TS2, TS3, TS4: Sims 2, Sims 3, Sims 4
- Tuning Mods: Mods that enhance/change gameplay by changes to the XML files (TDESC).
U
- Uploads: Data you share from your computer to the Internet.
- User Folder: Folder where your user-specific files such as your save games can be found. More details in can be found here: User files explained
- User Interface (UI): Set of on-screen buttons you can click to access various options.

- Vanilla Game: Game that is played without mods or cc.
