1000's Seasons to be a Sad and Nostalgic Gamer
In a first-person shooter, gamers expect to see single and multiplayer modes, scoring leaderboards for friend and global rankings, matchmaking for online play, and robust stat-tracking, but many features like these are missing from Battlefield 2042. When a core feature is missing from a game, it's the type of missing content that is noticed immediately and can have a detrimental impact on gameplay. Missing core features will usually be met with fan backlash, which is being shown by the negative Steam reviews for Battlefield 2042, with many taking issue with the game lacking the following features:
- Single-player campaign or story mode
- Server browser
- Standard multiplayer game modes (such as Team Deathmatch)
- Persistent lobbies
- A variety of in-game assignments
- Class system
- Many character customization options
- Stats page in the game menu
- Battle logs and stat trackers for other players (such as players previously seen)
- Global leaderboards
- Custom emblem support
- Spectator mode
- Permanent community servers
- Central U.S. servers
- Weapon test
Compounding this further are the other small details missing from Battlefield 2042's gameplay. In previous games, players were given multiple melee weapon options and other anti-infantry equipment, such as AP mines and claymores. Even the effects of suppressive fire have been removed in 2042, while animation flourishes, such as vaulting and being knocked back by explosions, are also absent:
- A large array of weapons
- Infantry gadgets
- Manual leaning
- Diving underwater
- Vaulting over walls/structure
- Crouch sprinting
- Backward prone position
- Explosion knockback
- Rolling from high falls/jumps
- Ammo or health pickup from teammates in battle
- Tiered reloads or reload pausing
- Melee weapon options
- Thermal optics
- Indirect fire gadgets
- Anti-tank weapon variety
- Lock-on launchers
- AP mines and claymores
- Suppression fire
Sadly, 2042 has also been found lacking in this department, with several aspects of vehicle gameplay or cosmetic features previously present in other Battlefield titles being nowhere to be found:
- Vehicle variety (compared to previous releases)
- Naval vehicles/boats
- Directional indicator for vehicle gunner
- Lock-on direction indicator
- Animations for entering or exiting a vehicle
- Decoupling turrets from tanks
- Customization options for drivers and pilots
- Tank zoom preference customization
- Tank gunner preference customization
- Secondary weapons for helicopter gunner
- Separate controls for helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft
- Control input while engaged in free looking while piloting aircraft
- Support for joystick controls
- Behemoth vehicles
Some features can be used to reward the player for playing in a manner that most benefits the team or for taking a more skilled path through battle, and the fact they're not present in 2042 may further disincentivize players to pursue the objective. Here are all the score bonuses missing from BF2042:
- Squad wipe scores
- Player damage points
- Vehicle damage points
- Vehicle kill assist points
- Headshot bonus
- Multi-kill bonuses
- Killstreak stopped bonus
- Comeback bonus
- Squad objective participation bonuses
The class system helped define each player's role in a given match, but without it and many of the other features from previous Battlefield games, it's much more difficult to achieve a well-coordinated team:
- Commanders
- Squad call-in special abilities
- Field upgrades for squads
- In-game VoIP (confirmed to be coming soon)
- Faction variety (both in number of factions and distinction)
- Cross-team chat
- Option to create a new squad
- Self-promote to squad leader
- Clans or platoons (confirmed to be coming soon)
- View of squad mates while waiting to spawn
- Indicator for incoming medic while downed (dosent work)
- Rank names or icons
Disappointingly, Battlefield 2042 lacks the map count of previous entries. The maps are bigger, but there are fewer of them. Some players have also taken issue with the map rotation in 2042, as well as the design of the levels themselves:
- Proper map rotation
- Number of maps in the base game (low count compared to previous games)
- Static weapon placement
- Number of destructible buildings and structures
- Balance between infantry and vehicles
- Maps with an infantry focus
- Level changes to dynamically alter the match
- Cover for infantry between capture zones
- Spawn point quality
- Building or area for infantry fortification
- Number of maps in urban settings
- Naval maps
Players have been met with a dearth of UI and display customization options, ranging from reticles to HUD elements:
- Number of control customizations
- Number of UI customizations
- Opacity options for HUD elements
- Scaling options for HUD elements
- Reticle customization
- Network performance indicators
- Scoreboard for individual players
- Details on the death camera screens
- Full support for displays wider than 16:9
- Useful options for joining friends in match
- Console player aim assist
- Ability to toggle crossplay options in-game
DICE has always been a developer that improves their games dramatically over time, but it's been since Battlefield 4's release in 2013 that a game of theirs has had so many issues. And while eventually Battlefield 4 found stability, its early rough stages are remembered vividly by fans. It remains to be seen how quickly DICE and EA can improve Battlefield 2042, but patches and content releases have already started rolling out and been promised. Being such an important franchise for EA, there's sure to be urgency within their ranks to get Battlefield 2042 up to fan expectations.

Being BF veteran myself, unfortunately its sad and this list @Ishiz0 covers 99% of the things missing.
Most of the squad functions in previous games have been forgotten. And previous list covers those.
About portal servers, yes they should be persistent but also there are so many issues with those (XP limitations, bugs etc.).
Good thing with the portal servers that they were at the launch, that I can give Kudos to DICE/EA.
Other things like: minimap functionality is limited, forced really annoying begin of the round animations that can't be skipped (unless you play Rush/TDM where you do not have to watch them).
Also end of the round "slogans" are quite childish, not sure to which group of people they are targeted, at least not to BF veterans.
Missing platoons/clan tags is a big issue too, missing proper scoreboard where you can see your kills and deaths, for some reason even the new revamped scoreboard that should be coming is missing things like kills, ping and it's not done the way it was done in previous BF games. Playing with friends (more than 4) is practically not possible.
A lot more maps/weapons are needed to keep ppl interested. Decision to postpone new maps has caused many ppl to having a break until new maps are in game. Give us content do not postpone and pls. give us more than 1 map because it won't be enough and most importantly give us inf focused maps.
Continuing this: Quality improvements: They have to done faster and actually fixing the bugs: (still can't be revived near the wall, default loadout changing to sniper is still in the game, random warps still happening, not able to shoot after exiting vehicle, sometimes can't exit the vehicle, sometimes can't jump (has to press E to fix it) etc etc).Chatting should be possible to opponent team - I know this is blocked because of the hostility in chat but it's not the solution. There should always be possible to chat to opponent team as well.
Then this chat filter, some words like clan is banned, why? It's just an example of weird censorship.
Personally I still play BF2042 but I only play Rush/TDM at the moment because CQ maps (especially 128 ones) are just boring imo.
