my first memory of pvz was back in 2014 or earlier, when i was a small child and my family was mad poor. i would play other popcap games that were given to me, like peggle deluxe, insaniquarium deluxe, and one of the zuma games on a gifted laptop. one day, i randomly discovered pvz on youtube, which was an extremely simple video where the player used cheat engine and would just spam spikerock and tangle kelp, but it was more than enough to intrigue me. for so long, the only ways i have entertained myself with pvz is by repeatedly playing the web version over and over again (it contained only the first 14 levels and includes vasebreaker endless and survival endless on night as extra content), and watching a LOT of videos on youtube, ranging from regular gameplay to peculiar parody videos, and to some official videos by popcap, like that one song about tooth decay.
i eventually got the game on tablet few years later, and then later purchased the steam version in 2021.
my fav pvz game has got to be garden warfare 2. i have purchased it on steam last year on september, and it has been the most addicting game i have played in a very long time, and ops mode alone was enough to keep me playing for the first 60 - 70 hours. fyi main reason i got it specifically on pc is because i don't have a console other than a switch. this is also the only multiplayer 3rd person shooter game i play.
my fav plant as of now is probably asparagus from pvz adventures. i never played the game, but its design just sticks out to me. those vids from rfm also made the plant more memorable for me.
i have 2 separate interactions i'd like to write about, one that has relation with official content, one being in person and a mod included. first one i'd like to mention is playing with a small youtuber "Reubzzz72" on gw2 on his streams, very chill and entertaining guy.
the other is me and a long time friend playing a pvz 1 mod that adds "vs mode" from playstation and xbox versions of pvz 1. we would play this mode and i would witness my friend panicking and raging on multiple occasions. the reactions they had when i would either spam zombies or spawn a garganuar right at the start when they were on the plants side were great. i also had some satisfaction winning against them when i was on plants using some plants that are usually deemed bad like split pea and the regular peashooter. don't worry, they won at least once that one time they were on zombies and i relied too much on stall.
we've done this several times in college in late 2024. probably the funniest experiences i've had that included pvz.
i never had pvz merch, but i wish i did back then. i at least had some memories relating to that, that being watching plush videos on youtube.
there is one more pvz-related memory that i'd like to share, that being watching this fan animation on youtube for the first time many years ago.
there is some room for improvement in terms of the dialogue, but that didn't matter much to my younger self. it was a MAGICAL experience to watch this video as a child who was big into pvz.
