Re: why are the download speeds extremely slow on origin?
This bickering ends now. If you cannot post without attacking another user then please do not post.
From here on, any posts which in any way breach the AHQ User Rules and Guidelines will result in action being taken. Please ensure that you have read the AHQ User Rules and Guidelines before posting: https://answers.ea.com/t5/help/faqpage
If you continue to have an issue with your speeds then please go through the steps listed in this thread. Just because one service works well does not mean that all others will and as such you may need to play around with your settings.
I started downloading Mass Effect Andromeda to test Origin once again @TidalWavesLion and am seeing speeds between 37MB/s and 44MB/s. If you are seeing the issues with slow downloads then please try all the steps suggested in this thread and also try safe mode with networking to see if there is a conflict somewhere. You may also need to speak with your ISP to ensure that there are no issues there.
All steps were followed, tried it on 2 computers, both with separate ISP's, DNS was also adjusted from automatic to either 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 . Speeds are still very slow. Both of these computers are running a fresh Windows 10 pro with recommend specs. Both ISP's have confirmed there is not throttling to the uploaded trace route of EA. They also confirmed that there are speed dips from the EA servers.
Seeing as this is not an isolated issue for some users even when the initial trouble shoot suggested doesn't work, would this not suggest that there is indeed an issue with the EA network for certain users getting throttled? It would be helpful if EA were more transparent about this.
@Darko, I've already stated previously that I've tried all steps in this thread. I've spoken to my ISP and they've stated that they've also been called repeatedly about the issue and they said it was no on their end. As stated, a week ago, I've tried to download games on Origin on 3 different ISPs and got the same result. I also tried on 5 separate computers with varying network Configurations (and 4 separate Operating systems), on Hardwired and Wifi connections... I even had a networking tech sit next to me and diagnose the problem.
Regardless, I'll be contacting support tomorrow. It's been over a week since I started using the error reporting again and it's been 4 days since my last ticket and I'll have to use the ticket number from my last report.
Yea... Was downloading at 40-60MB/s on one 17gb patch for BFV, then on the second, subsequent 10gb patch i was averaging 300KB/s to 3MB/s. So it's definitely not the EA scapegoat of ISP/DNS location issues. We can point fingers all we want, but the matter of the fact is, regardless of who's fault it is, other gaming companies are competent enough to make it work. EA seems to be incapable. I thought I'd give them a chance and subscribed to the $15/mo Access after the various times they've screwed me over as a customer, but after receiving 300KB-3MB/s download speeds, I've canceled my sub. This isn't an illegal hosting site in the early 2000's where people download free things at throttled speeds, but the speeds I'm downloading this 10gb update sure feel like I've hopped in a time machine.
Update! And buckle up there's a lot to go through and sadly, i can't TL;DR the steps suggested.
I managed to get in touch with EA support and a few things were brought up. Some i don't agree with, but others COULD help you guys. None of these worked for me but they may help you guys, as some solutions work for a few people but not all. These hit or miss solutions are annoying, but unless the problem will get solved on EA's side, this is all we have to work with right now.
Now, some of what support told me:
-The good old "ISP" blame game came back, despite me saying that I've used 3 other ISPs.
-Apparently since my ping is usually below 40ms, my internet isn't that good and that my ping -or any it seems- "should be between it should be always sin between 70 ms to 100ms for a better performance". My networking friend, Open division team AND other friends training for E-sports and the like, all laughed at that and said that's not right. The lower the better. Support also said that I have 100% on packets received and i had little packet loss. Apparently there's a Ping Benchmark that I wasn't reaching with the UO test and they wouldn't elaborate further.
-Apparently in addition an R&D mode, there's a "standalone" version of the Origin client. Apparently it "auto updates" or something so there could be an issue with the updates for the client? idk, sounds weird
-I managed to dig up and find at least one ticket from 5 years ago asking for help of the same issue. Once they say that they admitted that it was odd that the issue persisted for so long, especially after i told them that in July or Aug of 2011 we -brother and I- were forced to use Origin after the EA Download manager was discontinued. (BTW, the EA download manager NEVER gave us this problem)
-I was told something along the lines of "just because your internet connection works with other clients, doesn't mean that it will work with origin" What?
ANYWAY, after that long song and dance, here are the steps that were suggested to me and didn't work, but maybe they'll work for some of you guys:
Step 1: In Origin, head to Application settings and scroll down to "download restrictions". "Ensure that the Maximum download rate when out of game" and "Maximum download rate during gameplay" are both set to "No Limit"
Step 2: In Origin, head to Application settings > Diagnostics. Turn on "Safe Mode downloading" and see if it helps.
Note: Next to the "Safe Mode Downloading" option is a white "?" that indicates that that enabling it will increase download reliability, by reducing the speed. Now for anyone who's not up to date on networking and other technical terms, there are 2 different data transmission protocols, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) which sacrifices speed in favor of reliability and running checks to ensure all the data "packets" are received and in correct order, and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) which favors speed instead of reliability and doesn't ensure that you got all the packets.
For example: TCP would be used in e-mails, connecting with say a cloud or download service while UDP would be used in streaming (like twitch) or online gaming.
Having said that, the description of the "Safe Mode Downloading" seems to be confusing, indicating that it's a switch between the two protocols. I could see "Safe Mode Downloading" being more of a client stability function rather than a "download reliability, by reducing the speed" feature. The client should be already be using TCP, so unless it's there as a redundant check to ensure all the packets are being received and reassembled in the correct order, Myself, several net workers and even a programmer are led to believe that it's for stability issues for the client, not for the speeds. If someone could clarify or properly explain, that would be awesome
Step 3: Make sure Time/Date is correctly set on the PC. I have seen this issue in the past mess up Windows updates
Step 5: Uninstall Origin (use Revo uninstaller) then reinstall Origin . Now you can either use the regular client -a fresh install- from origin.com OR using the standalone version https://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe Now I was told that the standalone version was "Stand alone version is something which is the automated updated version in which you don't have to install any updates manually. And this is happening just because of the installation of updates." that's all support told me about it.
Step 6: Check about programs that might conflict with Origin, such as antivirus programs, anti malware etc. Also check your Firewall permissions. Make exceptions for Origin or if that still won't work, try disabling them temporariy
Note: If you have to disable your antivirus and anti-malware please remember to turn it back on. Some have timed options that with automatically turn it back on after a set period or after a reboot. Others you have to manually re-enable. Please remember to turn your protection back on as your computer is vulnerable without it.
Step 7: Do a clean boot (this includes disabling many start up programs). Yes, the old "Have you turned it off then back on" trick is a good way to either fix the problem, or help isolate it. 8/10 this has worked in IT. It's a funny joke, but it works and helps tick a box off the list.
Step 8: Clean registry, clear cache and temp files. Yes clear the cache and temp files. This helps A LOT at times however...
Warning!: Please for the love of GOD, be careful if you decide to mess with your Registry! I strongly recommend AGAINST IT! Unless you're 100% sure what you're doing with the registry or if you have a back up of the registry, avoid playing with your registry. That's the quickest way to mess up your computer and it can often result in you needing to reinstall the Operating system! Some programs will do the work for you but even THEY can accidentally screw up your registry. EA's support pages even state that by using Registry cleaners (such as CCleaner) are done at your own risk! Personally I recommend AGAINST anything that messes with the registry, and if you fear you may make mistake, Ask Microsoft for help. Trust me, I've played with Registries in windows virtual machines enough to know how badly you can mess things up and how hard it can be to fix them. Don't play with your registry. As a matter of fact, stay away from it.
Step 9: Ensure drivers are up to date. Seems stupid but again it can help. It also doesn't hurt to ensure that your Ethernet port/ WiFi adapter card drivers are up to date. If you don't know what your system configuration is, or you're running a pre-built computer and don't know, use CPUID CPU-Z. It will tell you everything from your CPU details, to your RAM Brand, speeds/ timings, even your motherboard information so you can get the right drivers. Yes, your Ethernet port has a driver and yes I'm serious about you checking it.
Step 10: Repair game...? I didn't get this one either as if you're having trouble downloading your game period, there's no option to repair it... I suppose if it's having an issue downloading the patch you could try? Who knows.
Step 11: Turn off Origin In-Game. Again, don't quite get this one, but I do know various Overlays or in game modes do not play nicely with games (discord's overlay not co-operating with Overwatch is a good example) so again, it can't hurt.
Step 12: Run Origin, as an Administrator. Maybe it could be a permission issue? I doubt it, but not all permissions use the UAC prompt.
Step 13: Opening/ unblocking ports. Yes I agree and have seen this one. On occasion, ports are blocked/closed to prevent security vulnerabilities or because you simply aren't using them. Sometimes, they won't recognize other communications but not always. Now EA's support page suggested unblocking the following ports for PC
PC UDP: Port 443
PC TCP: Ports 80, 443, 8080
However, the chat support last night ALSO suggested unblocking these ports as well:
This was suggested after support got me to do a UO trace to EA's servers, checking the hops and packet loss. This is where this came in:
Support: "Thank you for waiting, I have evaluated the report and I can see that your packet loss is perfect and there is nothing wrong with your packet loss but there are a series of unknown hosts.
My supervisor reviewed the UO trace sent by you and he suggested to contact ISP to fix this issue
An unknown host is an error message that generates when a destination computer or host server name cannot be resolved."
It is true, sometimes an unknown host can be caused bu an unblocked port, but not always.
Supervisor: "while we were working on the UO trace that you attached we were able to see the ping is very low
So if you can attach the 2nd UO trace report we will be able to se if your ping varies or it remains the same."
So I attached a second UO Trace
Supervisor: "Ok now if you check your ping it is the average pint time is below 40 ms."
I said Yes
Supervisor: "it should be always sin between 70 ms to 100ms for a better performance."
Mentioned that my ping usually rests below 40 and I've only noticed the 70-100 range during online gaming, or when connecting to server in Asia or SEA (between 120-almost 300 with minimal lag, especially when I'm playing Overwatch with my friend).
Supervisor "yes 200-300ms is too high and this can happen if you choose different servers apart from your region."
We discussed things a bit more then the supervisor said this after saying my ping wasn't reaching a certain Bench Mark (while on the phone with my ISP):
Supervisor: "As I said before we need the ping to be between 70-100 Anything above or below is going to cause issues. And I can clearly see here it is no where around it that is why we would recommend you to please get in touch with your ISP about this."
Now, Ping is affected from everything from server load, to server location/ how many server hops it takes to get to the destination and back, and even how it's routed and handled. It's not always your ISP's fault and in a case like this, it isn't (especially when i tried 3 other IPS... and when I say OTHER I mean that I've tried 4 ISPs in total.
Names censored in screenshot for obvious reasons.
Now this statement is only partially correct. Download speed is the speed you actually get, it's your speed. Surfing speed is more dependent on like like browsing the internet or how a company describes their connection speed -per package (according to what we were taught when i was in school and my ISP confirmed this last night).
Now I bring this all up because of this: EA claims that and ISP needs to unblock the ports, which isn't always true. Most ISPs that I'm aware of, don't block the ports OR unless it will cause a vulnerability to THEIR network, they don't block ports. My local ISPs confirmed this and stated that any port unblocking has to be done on the local machine at the user's risk. They can't quite help a user unblock the ports, and suggested that one ask Microsoft for help or to find a tutorial online. They agree that while it COULD help, is puts you at risk for malicious attacks and malware infections, so they advise against it and find it a bit outlandish for a big client to require so many ports -and just ports in general- to be unblocked for downloads to work correctly bit, it's not their download client so they can't say much.
BTW, here was my UO tests if anyone was curious to know what the results would look like as well as my own speeds.
IP Addresses of local area near me censored to protect me.
Step 14: Flush/Revert the DNS or change the DNS to Google DNS .
Step 15: Check on Reddit and YouTube. So far i haven't found a fix yet, but they are a resourceful bunch who are able to explain things a lot better than I can
Step 16: if you know when this problem started -or if you're able- system restore your computer to an earlier point in time. sometimes it can be an update issue or something (I've also used this as a solution for removing nasty and stubborn computer malware.) Just check to see if you have a restore point dating back to before the issue started happening if it was recent.
Step 17: Get off your VPN and stop P2P sharing. VPNs from what I read cause an issue
That's all the steps either suggested to me or that i could think off. Now, I tried them all (except for playing with the registry as CCleaner has previously both screwed up my computer's registry as well as disabled may drivers i needed, and I don't use VPNs currently so that wasn't applicable.) I'll update if i can/ if i find any other solutions but again, i hope these work for someone or they at least help.
If you need help with certain steps, Google is your friend as you can find Microsoft help forums that explain how to do it (for your respective operating system) or even YouTube tutorials. I don't want to include too many links here and have them removed as I don't know how many links I'm allowed to include in one post. me and a few IT friends are trying to see if we can find a workaround for this issue (when we can spare the time), one that will hopefully help everyone out.
Again, Me and my friends are going to try to troubleshoot this and look for a work around. We may not work for EA, but enough of us are facing the problem that if we find a solution, I'm willing to pass it on and see if it helps others.
Problem is not solved. No advice works. Origin does not update, OriginThinSetup.exe is downloaded at 17-18 KB/s (60.4MB in about 90 minutes). Downloading from STEAM about 5MB/s, from GOG and Uplay too. My Internet connection is 80Mb/s. Origin servers simply do not work. I installed STEAM - it works right away. Uplay, GOG, Epic Games Launcher, Battle.net also. Origin does not work even with magic tips. I will not buy games on Origin, because I can not play them.
your service is junk, has always been junk. will continue to be junk. and i will continue to come here and flame until i get banned. recreate another account and flame on....
Have you ever wondered if people would stop complaning if you actually didn't sit here and blatenly lie to ensure your job possion. We are hundreds of people having these problem. Even some post are YEARS!! old. And the company you work for still has not done anything, they screw the consumer time and time again and we're supposed to take it in? HECK NAH. Forget it, what do you think we are, stupid?
Besides that the hate your getting in here is very much justified. Look at the way treat the consumer and maybe you'll understand the outrage as well.
Downloading a 4.5 GB BFV patch which has taken me about 2 hours and 30 minutes, while having 300/300 mbs/s internet, and working on every other DRM but yours. Then What in your mind would logicly tell you that it is our fault. That is blatenly lying. You guys won Worst Customer Support, and Worst Company for the idk 7th time in a row thanks to this, ENJOY.
That's the way enterprises make profit pal, they keep lowering their budget on stuff that keep the bussiness running, they get the cutting so much loose they don't realise they went too far and now they're * on the costumers.
