Okay, so EA technical support were unable to fix the issue.
EA have now admitted that it's a bug from their last game update, which was what I advised them from the outset! I spent an hour and a half trying to fix the issue this morning. I joked that at least one of us is being paid by EA to fix their games!
I've now been told that EA have closed the issue as 'Resolved' because it's a bug in the latest patch. That doesn't resolve the issue as I still have a game that's unplayable.
So it seems we're at the end of the road. The games unplayable.
I've been in touch with the retailer and they've confirmed that I can if I give notice to EA, I can apply for the game retail price to be refunded, with any associated costs (so looks like I will be paid for that hour and a half's time after all!).
So here's your courtesy ten working day's notice, EA.
Please offer a refund or a resolution for the faulty goods you have supplied. In the absence of a resolution, this is your notice that I will automatically seek cost recovery through Tesco Bank plc (a company of Royal Bank of Scotland Group) and Mastercard under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 on Friday 24th July 2020.
