Ok have solved my own problem after trawling through how the cloud works. Because I was having problems with connecting to Facebook, the last save I did was linked to my gamecentre account. When I reinstalled the game and reconnected with Facebook, the Facebook cloud took preference over gamecentre cloud and so the Facebook cloud only had the saved game from 17 days ago, which must have been when Facebook connection went wrong.
After working this out, I signed out from Facebook so I was only logged into gamecentre, then connected to the cloud again.... It then found the save from today that is linked to the gamecentre cloud. I download that gamecentre game save which gave me back all my data, then reconnect to Facebook. Then I upload the game to the cloud again (so this time it linked it with the Facebook cloud) and now all is ok and I am back to my correct levels.
