Re: The Sims 3 quit unexpectedly - 64 bit, Mac OS High Sierra

@eeevamay  After installing only the base game, you now have a folder called "The Sims 3 Packs"?  That's not how things are supposed to work, although it's been a while since I installed the 32-bit version.

At any rate, please do a clean uninstall of Sims 3, as described here:

https://bluebellflora.com/how-to-do-a-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall-on-a-mac/

I'd suggest manually deleting everything rather than relying on the built-in uninstaller.  Create a new admin user account on your Mac, download only the Sims 3 base game in that account, and try to run it without using the Super Patch.  Whether it works or not, run the Super Patch and try again.  Let me know how it goes.

Your graphics card's device ID is not in fact in the game's database, so adding it may help.  But I'd rather see whether the new account works first—you could get another Unknown Error because the card wasn't properly added or because of leftover files in the current user account.  So it's best to isolate the potential issues.

If redownloading the Super Patch would take too long, and it doesn't show up in Downloads in the new account, you can move it to Macintosh HD > Users > Shared, which all accounts can access.

@puzzlezaddict Success! The base game worked on the new user account, both with and without the patch. So I should now try installing the packs on the new account? Will I just have to play on the new account from now on?
Either way, hooray! Thanks so much!

@eeevamay  Go ahead and install HELS and LN as described in post 4, with the workaround for LN being critical here.  Once you've confirmed that the base game works in the new account, test it in your main account too, and let me know whether it works.  It it doesn't, please look for a Sims 3 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts, and if you find one, trash it and try again.

If this doesn't help either, we may need to do some digging to figure out where the files are hiding in your main account.  Luckily, there's a Terminal command for that; you wouldn't have to go around opening random folders.  But what would be even better is if you didn't need to do this.

In the interim, you can play in the new account if you want.  It's trivial to transfer saves and other user data from one account to another, so you won't lose your progress.

@puzzlezaddict The base game works in my main account now too.

The next issue seems to be with downloading the packs at all - I click download in Origin and it goes through the motions, even coming up with a 'new content ready to install' notification. But there are no new icons in the Applications/The Sims 3 folder and nothing new shows up in my game library in Origin either. The Origin download manager shows both packs as complete, but they both still have a download icon next to them (screenshot attached). All I get is that same 'The Sims 3 Packs' folder in Applications/The Sims 3 which has nothing but two folders called '_Installer' and 'SP01' in it.
When I click the 'show package contents' option as described in the workaround, there's nothing in the AddOns folder apart from the uninstaller.

@eeevamay  When viewing the expansion and stuff packs, you should see multiple entries for each one you own.  One Download button will be for the 32-bit version and one for 64-bit, and it's impossible to tell which is which without trying both.  It sounds like you might be clicking the 64-bit version, so whichever one you tried, please try the other instead.

Ah, of course. Why wouldn’t there be multiple versions of the same thing that are impossible to distinguish from each other??

Anyway, happy dance, it’s all finally working!! Thank you so much for all your help, no way I would have been able to get this far on my own. And my baby hasn’t deigned to arrive yet so I can spend some time playing before they do!

    Thanks again, modern-day Sims legend.

@eeevamay  I'm so glad to hear everything is working.  (And yes, of course we get the most ridiculous implementation of the 32-bit/64-bit combination, because why would we want something logical?)  And hopefully your baby will have at least a little respect for your Sims time, both now and after being born.
