Hello @mscarlet48 As @CMeki mentioned you don't have much RAM. I recommend that you check the manual to see how (and if) it can be upgraded.
To disable the AMD Adaptive Sleep Service click Start and Type services then click Services (Desktop App), Find AMD Adaptive Sleep Service in the list and doubleclick it. Click Stop then in Startup type select Disabled. Click OK and close Services.
Reboot and see if it works better.
@mscarlet48 First you should not use restore if you are having issues with just one application. Restore could be used if you are having issues with the operating system. The AMD APU shares the 2.0Ghz clock among the cores - the more cores active the slower the cores run. The graphics unit is integrated into the cpu chip. There is no "real" dedicated video memory. The dedicated memory (and shared video memory) is borrowed from main memory. Adding memory to your computer's may help performance in general. As the system restore may have removed required files you may have to do a reinstall of the game.
So I backed up my sims files and tried a system restore (this was before I saw your comment roberta591 oops), but I got an error message that said "system restore could not access a file" or something like that. I tried everything in this article except method 2, but none of them worked. And after a while, I tried to do yet another system restore and all my restore points disappeared. So I guess I'm not doing that... I also disabled the Adaptive Sleep Service and that didn't help either.
I'm going to try increasing my memory/RAM. My manual is probably buried in a box somewhere, is there any way I can find one online or on my computer? The model is 15-af159nr.

@mscarlet48 It looks like you have to remove the bottom cover from your HP. Once open you should see 2 memory slots - one with a memory card and one open. As your dxdiag says you have 4Gb that means the card is a 4Gb memory card and you can add a DDR 3 4Gb SODIMM memory card in the empty slot and put the cover back on. Using 2 - 4Gb modules rather then 1 8Gb module should allow the motherboard to run the memory in dual channel and provide a performance boost. Most motherboards do this but not all. While this is not a very complicated procedure I don't advise a novice to try this as you will be exposing the all the electronics of your beloved laptop and one oops can be fatal. Google adding memory to your laptop - there is a couple of utube vids on how to. hth
I upgraded to 8GB of RAM (I replaced mine with the ones from an old computer so I hope that doesn't cause more problems, but it seems to be ok) and now Sims 4 works fine, but my computer still freezes every second. Am I able to undo the graphics card update? I'm pretty sure that's what caused it.
@mscarlet48 A safe way to update the video drivers is to first download the correct video drivers. Then in the control panel - programs and features, uninstall the existing video drivers. Then install the correct drivers you just downloaded. Reboot the computer and that should load the new drivers. You may have to readjust the resolution. The performance of the AMD Radeon HD 8400 integrated video chip is on par with the Intel HD 4000 which is on the low end of the scale.
I rolled back the driver update I did before and now my computer is working perfectly! Thanks for all your help 🙂
