Game crashes to black screen

Sul Sul! My game keeps crashing after I load any playable household. The screen goes black, and though I can hear sounds coming from the computer, I have to restart it. I have tried deleting the Sims4 folder and starting a new game, then I tried repairing the game from the EAapp, I even uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled it. It keeps crashing everytime.

I attach the DxDiag, if someone can help me, I'd be reeeeally thankful!

  • @alelind  I still think it's worth testing with a different graphics card.  Your computer's processor doesn't have an integrated graphics chip, so that's not a possible test, but if you don't have a spare GPU you can use in your own computer, you could remove yours and have someone else test in their system.

  • Update: The game just got updated through the EAapp. Thought it might solve the problem but no, I managed to enter the household and the screen went black again. Had to restart (again) my PC. Please, help!!

  • @alelind  Thanks for the dxdiag, which lists a couple of serious crashes of the graphics driver and a few more crashes that might be related to the driver as well.  So the place to start is with a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver.  Here's how:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

You can get a fresh copy of the newest Nvidia driver here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/224750/en-us/

Restart your computer after installing and before trying to play.  If you see the same issue, please post a new dxdiag.

    Hi again!

I did remove the drivers and reinstalled them following the instructions (and scared to death about killing my PC in the process... I do not even know how to use an Excel, imagine installing exes and letting them remove vital parts of my Pc's brain...).The process did not kill my Pc (thank the maker, lol), but the game keeps crashing into a black screen that does not allow me to do anything. I have to reboot it manually.

I attach the new DxDiag. Please help!!!

  • @alelind  Your new dxdiag lists more crashes of the graphics driver, which is not great considering you've already reinstalled the driver.  Do you have a friend or family member that could loan you a different graphics card to test with?  I ask because that would be a quick way to tell whether the problem is the card itself or something else about your system.  You'd probably need a low-powered card, something like a GTX 1050 or 1650, since your current GT 1030 doesn't draw much power and you might not even have a supplemental power connector hooked up and ready to use.

If this is too daunting for you, that's fine, we can run other tests.  Please download the free 3DMark trial from Steam and run Time Spy three or four times, back to back.  Let me know whether you get a crash, and if you get at least one clean run, please link the result here.  You don't need to create a separate account or buy anything; there should be a link to a web page with basic info.

@puzzlezaddict thanks for coming to my rescue!! Yesterday I tried one more time, and this time, even though my game crashed to black again, I was able to queue three interactions between two sims. The game crashed after the third click, but I could hear my sims giggling and talking behind the black screen (that was creepy, by the way, lol). Obviously, I had to restart my computer. After that I got fed up, and noticed that my Sims 3 were available for download on the EAapp, so I downloaded them. When the download was complete I tried to start the game, and it crashed to black screen again. I'm suspecting two things: 1- something is wrong with the graphic card (I can browse the internet, watch videos, manage basic stuff), or somethinf is wrong with the EAapp, or the EA launcher... My kids suggested I try using Steam... I'll try that, and if it does't work I`ll try to get a different card. Both outcomes, I'll come back and report! Thanks again!!

  • Back again to report...

Steam didn't do the trick. I managed to download only the base game and it crashed to black screen after loading my household.

Then tried another game in Steam (Fall Guys) and it worked fine.

After that I uninstalled the EAapp, and installed it again. Crash to black again.

The only free game I had in my library, other than Sims, is Zuma. I could play that just fine.

    I'm at a complete loss...

  • @alelind  I still think it's worth testing with a different graphics card.  Your computer's processor doesn't have an integrated graphics chip, so that's not a possible test, but if you don't have a spare GPU you can use in your own computer, you could remove yours and have someone else test in their system.

@puzzlezaddict Hi! Yesterday I took my PC to a repair shop, and the technician tested another graphic card (an AMD Raeon hd 6700, which he said was lower than needed, but was the only one he had). I worked just fine, and I've been testing it since then.

Thanks a lot for your help!!

  • @alelind  Hopefully this GPU works for you.  Since it's very old, I'd suggest at least considering getting something newer, a used entry-level gaming graphics card if you don't want to spend the money for a new one.  Used cards are quite cheap now, especially the lower-end ones, and buying in person (for example from Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace) could mean you had the opportunity to test the GPU before handing over any money.  Let me know if you'd like help picking something out.
