The right trigger zooms into the map (left trigger zooms out) as usual. I've tried my button layout on PC as well and it also doesn't work there.
To recreate it just have someone plug in a controller to PC or PS4 and use customize layout. Change pings to left on the d-pad and it won't work when pinging the map. No other button works either.

Please raise it to the team. This is a small bug but for those of us who switched from default controller setups, it's so annoying.
Here's a bit more info:
1. Persists after deleting and reinstalling game on PS4.
2. Persists after resetting PS4.
3. Persists after going back to default button layout.
4. I've read that if you launch game on same system with different user ID pings will work again but I haven't tested this yet.
Basically, it appears that once you customize buttons you nuke the ability to ping in death boxes as well as ping on mini-map.

Solved!... mostly.
1. Go into button layout.
2. Reset the button layouts. Press BIG PS4 controller button to do it.
3. Then select custom button layout *
4. Now you can ping mini-map and inside death boxes again!
* Ping still broken with custom layout.

We've raised this up to the QA team to investigate. Thanks for sharing the workaround fix though, hopefully others find it helpful while it's being looked at. 👍
Doesn't work on xbox version, ping system is still broken. I use evolved setting but customized, I swap a with RB but it still doesn't work even with the work around you said.
any news about this bug coz it really effects gameplay
I'd appreciate at least a response, if they are too lazy to fix what should be a fairly simple job considering what they can do, then just say, save me wasting my time writing messages on this forum. A gameplay effecting bug which has been there for like over 6 months, and apparently they they are unaware of the issue? Do the devs not look at the forums? Do they just leave it the community managers?

I can't believe this is still broken. I used to check every patch by changing all my settings, getting disappointed, and changing it back. I just gave up. It wasn't worth it. I do not want to be Respawn's Game Tester for free.
The question is, how many times am I going to have to bump this before I get an answer. This is getting beyond.

Also can’t ping the map or loot in deathboxes with my custom setup putting ping on X (ps4). I don’t understand why they can’t just have deathbox ping as r1 like the inventory. It’s really pissing me off as I currently have my optimal control layout that is hindered by stupid ping limitations that could have been fixed MONTHS ago.
This post is 9 months old how do you have no details on the issue by now?

What happens when the bug occurs? I have a customised control scheme, where I have changed Ping to the square button and Use/reload to R1. The touchpad is jump, and X is Map. This configuration does not let me ping a location on the map. It says R1-ping location but this does not work. The square button also does not let me ping a location. I have no problems using R1 to ping items in the inventory menu.
What should be happening instead? I should be able to ping a location on the map.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Change the control scheme so that X is the map, R1 is use/reload and square is ping. Try and ping a location on the large map during gameplay.
This bug provides me with a minor disadvantage during the drop phase and during gameplay.
I have the control scheme set up this way so I grab items, use my tactical, jump and shoot without removing my thumbs from the stick.

What happens when the bug occurs? Remapping the 'ping' button on console results in the in-game ping to lose functionality while either in a death box, or while viewing the map overlay. Clicking the ping button simply does not generate a ping in either of these contexts, 100% of the time after remapping this button.
What should be happening instead? One should be able to ping loot from death boxes, and be able to ping the map directlyh

Additionally, remapping ping causes one to be unable to ping for a specific health item in the health wheel.
Additionally, remapping Ping prevents the use of Replicators for Crafting (if you set Ping to X)

Yep. Having the same problem here. Just replying so this gets visibility.
The same things happends on PC. And there are another issues related to the gamepad configuration. For example, keyboard players can move while they are looting, with a gamepad you can't do that. Another issue is that you can't change your weapon while you are lotting, so you have to get out from the looting menu, change the weapon and then get in again...
