I am having the same problem too.
As far as I can tell, it's linked to being in "Invisible Mode" in the actual Origin client.
Or, being invisible in the In-Game Origin client.

I've had it switch back and forth on me, and the easiest solution seems to be to use Origin In-Game (Shift + F1)
Enable it to Online in the Friends List.

Join off a friend in the Origin In-Game friend's list.

That seems to be the workaround for me. The built-in friends list on the right hand side doesn't seem to be working properly for me.

    I have had the same issue since BF1 was released, maybe that helps but theres still an issue with friends. maybe it has to do with the invisible thing being persistant and * with the bf1 ingame system, eitherway theres still issues with partying, inviting, join party etc
