In Chapter 19 *******WARNING SPOILER******* The Story keeps telling.that the Moon is actually "living" so when the Unitology Chief,did shut down the machine, the moon awakens and starts absorbing everything -

That means you have to RUN not KILL until you reach the very  end or at least the only savepoint with bench,Suit Kiosk etc.

otherwise,the Vortex will kill you instantly ,everytime when you stay to long on one platform with the necromorphs
