Re: Original C&C crashing upon Nod mission 9 start-up

@BrutalBarracuda

Heh. All I really needed was that one shot at 2:49. The error message says that the instruction address is 00432421.

I just looked it up, and that's indeed one of the places in the exe that's been edited in the patch to fix a crash. So just install the C&C95 v1.06 patch I linked to, and it should work again 🙂

[edit]

It's the flare crashing the game. You get a flare near the top left corner of the map at the start, and it seems it has a reveal radius of 5 cells around the central cell. The full map only goes on for 4 cells above the location of the flare (1 in the playable map, 3 more outside it), so that's what crashes it.

    @Nyerguds Holy *bags! Thank you so much! It worked a treat and its so much nicer on the eyes! You truely have earned your hero standing!

    P.S. I don't suppose there is a way to slow down the mouse scroll is there? Even on slowest its still super fast!

    The fast scroll bug is caused by the fact the scroll speed scales up with your game's frame rate, which scales up with your CPU power.

    If you go to the game folder and run the CCConfig tool (which was added with the patch), you will see on the Visual Options tab that there's an option to limit the frame rate. It's known to help with that. Another option on the tool that sometimes helps is to enable the back buffer in video memory, though I think the patch should enable that one by default anyway.

    (If you don't know how to get to the game folder... Open the Origin menu and select "Application Settings". In the settings screen, go to the "Advanced" section. Copy the address in the grey box, paste it in your Windows file explorer's address bar, and press [enter]. In the folder where you end up you will see the actual installation folders of your games.)

    @Nyerguds Yep, you're spot on again. Worked a treat! That fast scroll was a pain in the rear!

    Cheers buddy. You may have just won my award for the most helpful person on the internet. Ever.

    I just like to help people. That's why I made that patch, after all 🙂

    Though, credit where due, a lot of people helped with that. The aforementioned map reveal crash was fixed by VK, another crash with the stealth animation was fixed by Komfr, who also figured out the first version of the high resolution patch, and the CnC-DDraw system which contains that nifty frame rate limiting option you just used was created by hifi, one of the main developers of the cncnet online play system for C&C1/RA1/TS/RA2.

    Oh, small extra note... due to it originally being made for Windows XP, the CCConfig tool disables the Windows '95 compatibility mode on the C&C95 exe whenever you save the settings. This was preferable in WinXP, but it seems that changed now, and I haven't gotten around to updating the tool. If you ever get the problem where opening the ingame menu during gameplay freezes everything until you press ESC to close said menu again... find the C&C95 exe file and re-enable Windows 95 compatibility mode on it; that fixes it.

    If you got any issues with the high resolution in the patch (it's mostly just some refresh bugs), I suggest you check out the relevant sections in the patch release notes (either the web page version on the site, or the .rtf file in the game folder); it has a couple of quick fixes for common issues.
