Re: random freeze and lockup (PC) during cutscenes

While it is not exactly a "fix" since I still do not know what was causing the issue I, however, have solved the problem it seems. I have played somewhere around 6-8hrs and done I think over 8 cutscene conversations. Around the 4 hour mark and my 3rd conversation I did have two crashes, but now they are white screen crashes that I can at least "end task" on, so not nearly as bad.

What I did:
- Format hard drive and re-install windows
- Updated drivers
- Full windows update
- Installed Microsoft Secrity Essentials
- Installed logitech software for G15 keyboard and G930 headset
- Installed latest 344.75 nVidia driver and Geforce Experience
- Installed Chrome
- Installed steam
- Installed origin
- Installed fresh copy of Dragon Age Inquisition
- Installed xBox One controller
- Installed VLC and ps3 Media server

Fairly bare bones now. Still have to install anti-virus and malwarebytes and see if any new issues arise, but at least I can play the game so far. I have a lot of other programs to re-install as well, but since I don't really need them right now, I will likely finish the game before I bother. Maybe it was a conflict with something else that was installed on the system, maybe the game just doesn't like gtx 660's, I don't know.

White screen Crash Info:
The white screen crashes both happened during the vivian recruitment at her estate. Both occurred during the section, but different lines of dialogue. They were during the part where you are at the window with her. One was right after clicking the flirt option, and the second was on a different dialogue line that I can't recall.

I have the exact same problem.

It started freezing during cutscenes, had the white/black screens if I tried to alt tab out so started in windowed fullscreen just so I could tab out when it happened.

Had to keep restarting the game constantly because it froze on every single cutscene. Eventually I just gave up.

That's my DXDIAG if any support get round to this.

    Help would be fantastic.

Prior to formatting it didn't matter whether I was in fullscreen or window borderless, when it froze, the entire computer was locked up, Ctrl+alt+del, alt+tab, windows key, etc had no effect. I tried tons of things to attempt to fix it as well.

Just some of the things I tried were; lowering graphics settings, changing physX in nVidia control panel to run off the cpu, fullscreen, borderless, turning off origin in-game overlay, rolling back drivers, re-installing drivers, air-canned the computer to make sure there was no dust, etc. The only console commands I had used was to show fps and the graph, as well, I did NOT use the fps cap fix or anything else. Two days prior to the game launching I had completely cleaned my computer, too. Anti-virus, malware, uninstalled old programs, cleaned up system files and trash, and even uninstalled some old games to open up space on the hard drive.

I turned origin's in-game overlay off again and have played prob another 4-6 hours worth since my post and I have not had a crash again, yet. While formatting sucks since you have to re-install everything again, I have to say at least it gives the best possible place to start for diagnosing issues. With a clean install and a bare bones place to start there isn't much to conflict with the game.

Hope you all have better luck, though.

Ha this looks so like me. I also resintalled the drivers, I cleaned my computer (not that it matters because nothing was overheating), I tried different settings just like you and I just now tried older drivers as well.

This last session lasted for about 2 hours or so before I got the black / white screen which sometimes happens and at least I prefer it to the freezes which are more common. It is approaching about 25 freezes and crashes now since I started playing. I could have enjoyed this game a lot better and had any of the reviewers experienced such problems I bet he wouldnt give it above 60 heh.

So all is pointing out that it is about the developers Bioware who need to fix this, because looks like we cannot

I've done everything possible on my end to try and get it working, pretty much what's already been said here.

Only thing left to try is sacrificing a virgin chicken when the moons align and hoping I get trhough a cutscene without it freezing.

That or just wait for a patch.

  • Hey Kwong, I have the exact same problem as you it seems, a problem I also had with BF4 but that has stopped recently. Has the game worked properly since you reinstalled windows? Also wondering if your CPU or GPU was overclocked when the lockups occured? If so, did you try disabling OC or changing it?

Reinstalling all the software is not a solution tbh.

The game has issues with changing rendering modes constantly.

I had alot of crashes in cutcenes since the game engine forces a 16/9 Aspec Ratio in cinematics.

Developed a tool to avoid crashes:

    http://www.flawlesswidescreen.org/

Install the DA:I plugin and have it running while you play the game🙂

Also, if you are a 3D Vision player you should check the fix we made:

    http://helixmod.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/dragon-age-inquisition-3dmigoto-dx11-3d.html

Again, reinstalling your whole OS + software is not a solution. The CRASHBYTE3 engine is the problem...
