Re: Reading telemetry - help

Hey! There's no straight and concise answer here, pal.

What's your platform? Codemasters' F1 can broadcast your telemetry for any device in your network. Even if you're on console, you can keep a telemetry app or logger open on your PC or laptop

Are you still able to get a refund? There are many paid apps out there, and I have used some since I got into this franchise. Including SRT, years ago. But unless there's a specific use case you're looking for that a specific app fits better, I don't see how one could justify paying for it. In other words, unless you know that a certain app offers a more streamlined UX for what you like to do with your data, keep with the free stuff.

Now I just use professionals tools MoTec and McLaren Atlas for the nitty-gritty stuff, and free/freemium services like Garage61 and VRS for the routine analysis. That's all for iRacing, but I mention it even still just to show that you should really have a reason to pay for these things.

If you're lost on the SRT app, I really don't see the point in paying for it until you learn the ropes of telemetry analysis.

A few free tools:

  • Telemetry Tool from Iko Rein @IkoRein . Oh my audacity of tagging this legend here 🤣. It's a superb app that will cover 99% of use cases out there. The only thing that may go against it is the interface and user friendliness.
  • PXG F1 Telemetry from an old user and friend of ours. He's off to greener pastures now and the app is no longer being supported, but you can still use it by setting F1 23 to broadcast your telemetry in the legacy UDP format.
  • Track Titan. The free tier will give you plenty and help you familiarize yourself with telemetry analysis.
  • EA's own Racenet. Never used it though 🤷

Resources. There are many to get you started, from the fundamentals to manage your tyres to actual manuals for telemetry apps – like this one for RST Software. Many guides on youtube as well, but let's say that tyre management usually is a culmination point and not a conversation starter.

How's your driving? Can you post your speed, throttle and brake traces for us to take a peek? F1 is a simcade and even though you can certainly make it harder and unpleasant to drive with a bad setup, you really need to go out of your way to mess up your performance with setup alone. Almost always, a tyre issue is a driving issue.

Overlapping inputs. Not modulating inputs. Being too aggressive on throttle application. Not being consistent. It's a long list and you'll be hard pressed to find a magic setup that fixes your tyre issues all the while enabling you to keep on applying bad technique.

There's no setup silver bullet, unfortunately.

Also consider that F1 caters for a broad audience, from pad users to simracers on expensive rigs. If you're playing with all simulation options cranked up, but your technique is subpar, there's no way to supplement that deficit. Even if you grab a tasty, pristine, irreproachable setup from a pro player, it won't stop your bad driving from hurting your tyres – quite the contrary, actually, since those setups tend to live on a knife's edge.

Same goes for telemetry. There's no single data field or trace to look at and know instantly what's hurting your tyres. For the most part, it's a methodical approach to improve your driving, eliminate and control tons of variables and factors, troubleshoot setups and fine tune your ride.

You also need to consider that racing slicks have a cliff. Their performance isn't a linear scale from tyre blankets to pit stop; they degrade and degrade until you reach a point that they're literally cooked, and your performance takes a dive as if it had fallen from a cliff – hence the name.

Tyre management is king in this sport. You can't keep demanding 100% qualifying laps from your tyres – and here's where the consistency steps in. You need to be able to be fast when needed, then dial down 1-3% on your pace (0.8 to 2 seconds per lap) on command to make your strategy work.

TL;DR: Post your charts, pal. Speed, throttle and brake traces. We should start from there.

    @mariohomoh

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, my Tool has been around quite some time and can typically help beginners but also the more experienced drivers on the real-time and offline analytics. I have many people even operating as race-engineers to their drivers using my Tool, which is quite nice.

    @imaspes

For the Tyre Wear, in my Tool you have these ways to check it

-- Driving pane: Real-time value of the tyre wear. Quite handy to see in real-time, if your driving does something odd on some turns or how you could reduce the strain on tyres. I use this now and then, especially on new track/car combos to quickly see, if I am doing something odd with my driving on the combo.

-- Workspace: This has the offline tools to really drive into the tyre wear, and where and why it happens.

-- Telemetry: If you define Math Channel for Tyre wear, you can also see the real-time tyre wear values, but they might not be very handy

-- Histogram + XY-Plotter: With these you can do real-time and offline visual analysis of the tyre wear

New additions, which might be handy

-- Statistics table: Here you see the session long tyre wear values

-- Statistics table graphs: Here you see the above values, but on per lap for the laps in session and you can see the per lap wear + the total wear for the tyre used on the stint.

These give you quite a lot of tools to play around on the tyre wear and what causes it and more importantly, where in your lap you are "ruining" or over-using your tires.

    Cheers.

@imaspes Just a screenshot or two – or a few – of those charts I mentioned will do! I did something similar here just a few days ago. Your driver inputs are key here – and I just now realized I forgot to mention your steering input chart as well.

@IkoRein Now I'll be all over Discord telling anybody who'll listen that I somehow managed to summon Iko Rein the legend himself! Haha thanks for chiming in!

Ivan, as I said paying for a telemetry app can be hard to justify. Mr. Rein's app here for instance hooked me and hooked me hard back in 2019 when I got back to F1 for good! Used to spend hours plugging data into a huge Excel file I hard to keep track of my performance and setups in these games. There are a handful of guides on Youtube teaching you the basics of the app – even from Iko Rein himself! That will smooth your way into telemetry analysis. It can be fun if you are a data driven or data minded person, if you fancy spotting (being a race engineer) or even stewarding, and if you love to squeeze every inch of fine tuning possible out of your driving and setups.

Ps: im playing on ps4 using the controller ABS ant TC. As a beginner, its difficult for me tô turn off those assists. Im playin on level 91 and started on f122. Less than 01 year. The apprentice curve (evolution) is ok?

i wanted to thank each and every one of you for your willingness. I tried to understand how our friend's app worked, but couldn't, mainly because I'd be using my cellphone. Nevertheless, I signed up for Titan and I've been tinkering with it for two hours. Since I can't get a refund, I'll keep both apps because the other one records the data anyway. It's interesting to grasp the telemetry of an entire race. I just need to understand it. Anyway, thank you all very, very much. I'll definitely strive to be fast!

@imaspes As Mario says, there are a bunch of free tools out there, but I also use SRT on my tablet.  Main reason being I track other session data/ notes on my Mac during sessions and use tablet to record telemetry, so it was a good fit for me from a workflow perspective.

Regarding your tyre issues, a lot of the points @mariohomoh covers are correct; there are a whole heap of factors that effect wear, and unpicking it is not so simple.

I too am learning about how to use telemetry, and being able to analyse it.

Question; do you play MyTeam/ Career and, if so, what has your performance on the tyre wear programme been like?

P.S. Thank you for the information sources @mariohomoh - very useful 👍🏽

@imaspes Hey, Ivan! The wasn't much in the screenshot. It's been a long time since I've used SRT so I don't remember how to zoom out and have at least a whole sector's worth of telemetry showing. There gotta be guides teaching you the basics of the app though.
I know you can toggle off the min, max and avg values and have a cleaner display, that I remember.

Hit me with a PM here and we can carry this on over there if you prefer as well. Pode lançar a braba em português mesmo, ta tranquilo.

Regardless of the solution you end up finding, you can always have a telemetry app on the PC recording your PS4 session as I said. It's way easier to navigate all this data on a bigger screen.

And your AI level looks very good for someone on the pad 💪🏼
