Re: escape button wont work ME1 LE

It's a shame that they changed the keybinds for this edition. In the original, you could right click to zoom out, so this wouldn't have happened.

In the days of original Mass Effect, non-responsive keys were often the result of poor performance. People who played on Intel graphics would sometimes report this issue. Are you playing on a dedicated graphics card?

I think there's a good chance that there might be a config tweak to rebind the functions of the escape key to another key. However, Google isn't really turning anything up right now, and I can't experiment at the moment because I'm not at my Windows PC.

For now, here's a possible workaround: If you have happen to have a controller, plug it in, and use that to exit the galaxy map. MELE allows the use of a keyboard and a controller at the same time.

  • Well, thank you for the lifehack. I`m appeared to have xbox gamepad so i used it each time i needed to zoom out the map.

    I successfully completed ME1 and started ME2.

now i`m stuck right after the meeting with Illusive Man - game suggests me to press escape and go to squad menu to level up - and i just cant - escape button does nothing, just as in ME1

But in ME 1 i can press U to bring up Squad menu, in ME this don`t work either.

Still hope there is some configuration options which can fix it...

I don use any mods - just clean steam installation

  • Also, i play on dedicated graphics (GTX 1050 Ti) on Debian x64 via  Steam Proton - should be all smooth according to peoples, feedback

  • Figured out temporary solution myself - enabled console and used console command ShowMenu to bring up the menu and open squad...still dont know why escape button does not work though

It's a little unusual, but you could try changing your keybinds as mentioned

    I haven't done so myself but in ¬game location¬\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME2\BioGame\Config you'll find BIOInput.ini.
Normally these can be edited using notepad.

Be sure to make a backup first of course, but you could try binding the various Escape functions (not just the menu ones) to a different key that's not in regular use, then save and try again.

    Again I haven't tested this myself so I can't give a guarantee, but it's worth a shot.

  • i`ve tried this - changed all escape bindings to F11 - BUT with no visible effect. That`s odd
