Yes Esc works fine in single player but does absolutely nothing in multiplayer.
The only button that responds at all other than the windows key (or alt+tab) is the Return key which sets you into another multiplayer match.
Im sure alt+f4 would work too but again that kills the game entirely.
It just occurred to me that there MUST be a console command to end a multiplayer session ...
That being said, does anyone have a link to a list of console commands?

That is odd. Did you tried to repair the game? (in Origin > Game Library > right click MEA > Repair)
No offense but ... uh... considering pretty much every time one of my origin games needs an update, it fails and requires a complete re-install of the game just to play again... not going there.
Besides this has been an issue since the first time I played multi like 2 or 3 installs ago.
And EA has been ZERO help in figuring that little issue out either.
Sat for 2+ hours numerous times waiting for live chats that were supposed to take like 12 min and same with phone calls.
It is not a full re-installation, just a check of the game files.
Neither I nor the EA support will be able to help you if you are not willing to do what we suggest.
As a note of interest....
The icons at the bottom of the screen that say, press space to continue, press enter to ready up, press (esc) to exit...are actually buttons that you can click on using your mouse. So if the actual key doesn't work, then clicking on the button on screen SHOULD work. I just tried it on my system and it does work for me.
