Re: Faster low rated player

@6hpy2hzsfzas

The video needs to go back farther so I can see how Kucherov starts skating. His energy is also going to be a factor. When you're outside of a replay, you should see that meter. From what I can gather with this clip though, Kucherov is slowed down by turning as well as the slight speed penalty when carrying the puck. He starts out facing to the right, then switches directions. This will slow him down. Then, he skates to the left before going in to a straight line. With Dickinson sprinting in a straight line, he's able to catch him. This is intended.

This is why I say nobody has proven that lower speed players are legitimately beating higher speed players. They always show the carrier turning, deking, being flatfooted, etc. If 2 players are side by side with the same energy skating the length of the ice and the slower player is beating them, that could be an issue. Your video is showing what is intended to happen based on the current mechanics of the game.

  • Like I said, Kucherov energy meter was higher not by much but slightly higher. A slight turn like Kucherov made on the clip does slow you down a bit but after the acceleration comes to play (90 vs 82). Just look at how often McDavid burns NHL defencemen and he's not always skating straight line. Kucherov should have been able to distance Dickinson easily.

What's your explanation for this one. It should have been a breakaway but my player froze for a few seconds.

This was against a 68 rated team. I could barely touched the puck for most part of the game. All my players are 84 and over. Reaction time was slower but why?

  • Here is my 2 cents in this…. This video is from NHL23, but since I replicated the speed of NHL players in my SETUP, I wanted to make sure the players speed were taken into effect in a race with all the same conditions 😀

So a race between CHIAROT (Upper Screen) 83 Speed and 83 Acceleration

    VS

LARKIN (Lower Screen) 93 Speed and 93 Acceleration

I tried to my best abilities to skate in a straight line with the puck, without activating turbo… So basically, all the inputs and playing field were the same.

Ah, the eternal mystery of player speed. EA's never been entirely forthcoming in regards to the skating mechanics in the game and their relation to player attributes.  I posted a video comparing two power forwards racing in different scenarios back when NHL 22 was out along with some questions about how things worked.  Thread here . It's a couple of years old but I doubt it's any less relevant now.

EA_Aljo did his best to answer some of the questions but we never did get a satisfactory resolution to things IMO.

@PlayoffError Let's also remember that having the puck also slows you down slightly with some friction. Back in 23 we remedied this with the self saucer pass to bypass the penalty. I've never been much of a fan of the catchup ability when a player is straight lining.

There is a tuner for Puck Carrier Agility and Skating. So a 93 speed skater might be knocked down to say 88 or whatever speed with the puck. In real life there isn't a huge difference from a player skating with the puck and without going in a straight line.

I'm not seeing where they stopped skating for a few seconds. I'm assuming you're the red forward going for the puck. It looks like you were possibly recovering from a poke check? You were basically flat footed and turned slightly where the Blackhawks player was able to skate in a straight line and get up to speed. You still beat them though and came away with the puck.

As far as lower reaction time in general goes, you'd need more video showing this happening. I'm not seeing it in this clip.

Exactly. In today’s NHL guys are not really slowed down by that much when skating with the puck. The puck carrier speed is set at 95% in my setup. So a guy like Larkin that has a 93 Speed, would be skating at a 88-89 clip. Very important when a player catches the D flat footed to go on a break 😀

I wonder what it is online 🤔

@KlariskraysNHL Of course there's lots of factors that go into skating speed. That's why in that old post I presented a scenario with as few variables as could as a launching point for the conversation.

Part of the issue is that the community ( especially those playing online ) have no real way of knowing exactly what's going on under the hood. For example, how much of a hit to speed, acceleration and agility does the puck carrier actually take? Is it a flat value or a percentage of their attribute's base value or some other calculation? Are there other attributes that come into play? We don't know, and it makes it really difficult to look at even the most basic, straight-line plays and determine if the game is behaving as it should or not.

Personally, I'd love to have the curtain pulled back and have some in-depth breakdowns on how these mechanics work. Of course there's a subset of the community that would nitpick such explanations to death or just outright deny them, but it's a shame we're all kept in the dark due to them.
