Proton makes Apex 100% compatible with Linux, it's not luck or oversight.
Linux is 1% of Steam players and that's not enough for Apex to worry. Most cheaters are casuals on windows installing cheating software. Cheating on proton is a major nightmare because of all the layers of compatibility involved. It's not nearly as easy as on windows.
NONE of the excuses EA gave to their decision justifies what they did. No data, no examples, no technical explanations. This change won't do ANYTHING for the cheating nightmare that is Apex.

@BatataSofiHere are the minimum system requirements, which haven't changed. I've already seen reports by pc players there's a noticeable drop in cheating or at least people that appear to be cheating. Will it fix all of it? No but it's at least a start. Apex isn't the only game doing this so I assume others have found the same.

Where are those stats that there's been a drop in cheating since the ban? I don't see it.
I play on steam deck, pc, and console. Anytime you are linked to a lobby with pc players, you are lucky to go a game without cheaters in your lobby, even after the ban. Pc games are notorious for cheaters. Linux isn't a requirement to cheat.
