Might be good News for Accountbans and SBMM.

Lets see if the new U.S. President Elect is following up on his words ...

"Furthermore, when users of big online platforms have their content or accounts removed, throttled, shadow-banned, or otherwise restricted no matter what name they use, they should have the right to be informed that it’s happening, the right to a specific explanation of the reason why, and the right to a timely appeal. In addition, all users over the age of 18 should have the right to opt-out of content moderation and curation entirely, and receive an unmanipulated stream of information if they so choose."

SBMM could be seen as Content Moderation ...

  • Hey all, going to shut this down as it's moving away from  the original intent and to save it going too far we'll end it here.

Your initial point @r1ggedgame is an interesting one and if anything does come into play relating to such changes we'll let you know but it's not something that you should be worried about, it's why we have a legal team so that we can all just play games and let them worrying about all that.

    Re-read the terms of Service.

Either agree to them and be able to play or do not and do not play.

And if you agree to them abide by them or suffer the consequences.

With freedoms come even greater responsibility.

Your first sentence has absolutely nothing to do with EA. SMH LOL.

    @Asmodeus566

Are you a lawmaker or lawyer ?
I just wrote this bcs, if it ever makes it into written law, it surely could have an effect on every online service that has its Headquarters in the US.
Then its up to the courts to decide if this would also apply to large gaming companies.
Terms of service would likely not be able to circumvent that, it rather would render them unlawful.

With me posting this, im just the canary in the coal mine.
Im not a US Citizen, but this could have also an effect on me bcs im a customer of said services.
Im just warning that this might have influence on gaming platforms ( not only EA) and the way they do their daily business.
Guess you just misunderstood my intention posting this.

We saw in the past that such laws can have an influence on gamers, just look at the european GDPR.
Quite somef games and game hosters (especially open source ones) had to remove their online game statistics or change their terms of service or even game code to comply with those local laws.
QL Stats for instance had to make quite some changes on how they treat player stats only bcs of the GDPR and QL Stats is more or less a community project.

And regarding my headline, might be good news for us or bad news, all depending on the companies reaction to such a law.
As small example on how there GDPR had a negative impact on me for instance :
I used to visit several small US news sites, they didnt want to comply with the GDPR and as a result they just region locked their content.

Let's don't move forward under any illusion that there is any such thing as an "unmanipulated stream of information." What you get on Facebook or X that is "unmanipulated" is as far from "truth" or "reality" as you are likely to find in your time on this earth. Everything is always being manipulated by someone for some purpose. The fad to be suspicious or even downright hostile to the idea that legacy media is "manipulating" what you see and hear is just a refusal to believe that professionals know more than we do or to believe that the real problem isn't professional curation. It's allowing the news cycle to become 100% commercialized, for-profit, and largely owned by billionaire tech bros. None of whom ever went to journalism school, or ever took an ethics class, or ever thought for two minutes about "the public good." At first all they cared about was money. Later their attitudes became more nuanced and they were willing to lose money with a larger goal in sight. That goal, if I need to remind you, has nothing to do with providing you with an unmanipulated stream of information. They are there to stir the pot and provide an echo chamber for their Randian one percent stream of consciousness. So unless you're planning on becoming some new age Howard Roark then start asking yourself some searching questions about what it is curation really means, and what it is it's really trying to do. And if you still end up believing that evil overlords are trying to manipulate you... you're right. Just don't think that trading in ABC news for Joe Rogan is somehow setting you free.

Edit: I just read the final line of your post and that's a whole other can of worms that I'll think very carefully about before I reply, for fear of saying anything offensive.

@reconzerowhat do you wanna say by this !??!?
this is a quote from US President Elect and not mine.
I only mentioned it bcs it could also have implications on the Games Industry.
Thats why i also mentioned the GDPR, bcs it also had effects on games i play.
I dont care what x nor facebook does, i dont use both of those platforms.
But what i use is this EA Forum and the Games themselves.
So please, stay on topic thnx.

And regarding my "last sentence" , i dont know what you read into that line, but to clarify :
Those news sites are mostly local news sites from the regions my US friends live.
When they send me links about sports or local happenings (for example the hurricane in florida) i end up being region locked bcs those websites dont wanna cope with european law.

So in short, so no misunderstandings happen,
my posts in this thread are solely centered on the effects which mentioned ideas of a soon to be US President might have on my gaming experience if they get written into law.
    nothing more nothing less !

SBMM could be seen as Content Moderation, bcs it prohibts me to play against the entire community of players in a game and its somewhat intransparent.

Account Bans : As we can read from various post on this forum, people often have a hard time to get their falsely banned accounts unbanned bcs the underlying system isnt very user friendly.
Shadowbans have to be announced to a player (not aware of any Shadowbans in Apex, but other games seem to have them) .

I hope we now are on the same page.
I apologize for not being too specific in my initial posts.
