Look at what you get just from get go firing up the game, it's like a recipe from everything you don't want, and people have complained about in games for decades:
· ridiculous user interface that's awkward and ugly
· nauseating shaky cam background screens
· hideous twitchy neurotic looking characters
· cartoon porno cosplay costume uniforms
Then you head into the terrible match making interface with nothing but the above to drive you bonkers, while you wait, and wait -- and wait some more to join a server on the other side of the planet where you'll have a ping measured in minutes... Fantastic! Then once you've actually joined a game you'll discover a litany of features that differentiated Battlefield from other FPS games, of which many were regarded as essential canon to the franchise -- are simply gone, or so screwed up they're useless:
· command menu is useless (commo-rose for off voip players)
· spotting for all players (only via drone, or spot seats with no rewards)

The biggest bummer of all, is what some hoped would be Battlefield 2142's salvation and saving grace: Portal. Not only doesn't redeem the most glaring flaws, but is completely moot in its present form as there are just many missing core features that make BF fun, that you won't be able to put back in the game -- it's just a feature limited sand box, you can't add to and a dead end. Worse, it appears to run on some horrible listen server setup with cloud setting support, so it can't even be run off line for single player...
It's truly sad that Battlefield 2142 so disturbingly bad; it's like EA went out of their way to do opposite of everything BF fans have clamored for, and made everything fans have complained about worse... Perhaps EA is singed on to ESG, and is getting more money that way to make the 'Woke' game world of Harrison Bergeron, but there's not much of a game left with that approach... Maybe there's a new audience for this sort of...thing, it sure doesn't include me, or ANY Battlefield fans I know...
- GRiPSViGiL4 years agoSeasoned Ace@Hoak I totally agree and on top of all this the maps feel unfinished and barren of details. Optimization is very poor. As you play the game it performs worse and worse.
They ruined Helicopter physics. It is just all around a bad game. I thinking about refunding.- 4 years ago
Back @GRiPSViGiL 'thinking about refund'... I think Battlefield fans, like you and me have serious cognitive dissonance with 2042, we've loved and enjoyed the franchise so much, even the lesser iterations of the game were still good enough.
But even with all the bad signs we went went ahead and forked out our hard earned money for...this, and we want so badly for it to be good, but it just isn't even 'ok' -- it's really shockingly terrible...
While 2042 does have some of the aesthetic grandiosity of a Battlefield game, it's like EA and DICE turned their kids loose on this or an ESG committee and let them design the game by random draw, it's really sad...
- cornybbq24 years agoSeasoned Ace@Hoak I agree! 128 players on ugly cheap designed maps is just chaos and no fun.
I prefer a modern day setting with smaller maps, 32 player rush/domination and 64 player conquest on smaller better designed realistic battlefields where you can have a fun tactical game with your squadmates.
It really hurts to see how horrific the game is. Its 100.000 miles away from the greatness of bfbc2 and bf3. They should just make a remaster of those two games and i would happily pay €100 for it.
Pto!- 4 years ago
@cornybbq2 Well said, and I agree. Some simple net math will tell ya 128 players while possible, is never going to look good in terms of WYSIWYG in the real world with all the diverging weapon metrics and player speeds that a BF game has -- all the connection quality variations players have, and 2042 is a poster child for this.
I also agree, EA could have done a remaster of just about any BF game and I'd be willing to play twice your suggested price if it was well done, and buy it for all my friends (and you), and pay to host a server (were that even an option).
Battlefield has Fans for a reason: the game's design canon that has been around and evolved and refined for nearly twenty years, is (or was) unique and compelling. Some iterations have been a bit off, and not as compelling as others, but all were recognizable as a Battlefield game, and none will have elicited as much buyer's remorse as this game has and will.
I think there may be problems here simply too big and expensive to fix, certainly in any timely fashion that's going to satisfy anyone that has doled out money. With that, the level of disappointment, disgust, and ire and volume of returns we're about to see when this game is released is going to be shocking.

I just dont get the cartoony fornite characters.. and ridiculous cartoony voices. People who play this want grit and gun play. Why feminize male characters? Truly some crazy world we live in where this is deemed normal. Its not, this game nixes the loyal base hoping to appeal to youngins whose attention span last longer than a snickers bar. What with the lack of destructive environments? Im utterly confused and seriously considering refund. EA needs to communicate their logic and plans or im out.
- cornybbq24 years agoSeasoned Ace@cdejesus1119 Lol snicker bar… but you’re 100% correct. I got one snickerbar child living with me so i know exactly what you mean. The game dumbed down and lost its soul completely with this last new content.

After reading weeks of hysterical posting akin to children having the mother of all tantrums on here and on reddit you somehow can't understand who Dice is aiming the game at.
The fortnite characters and voice lines are aimed at you!

Everything said here. This game is complete *… graphics not nextgen, gameplay is terrible, the whole game looks like:
quick, we need to get this game ready before xmas… $$$
EA - i want a refund, instantly
BF is dead…

I really don't understand what was going through their minds when they keep making these convoluted idiotic loadout menus.
Battlefield 3/4 were fine, then all of a sudden, let's make it more annoying to navigate.
P,S Specialist suck, team play is virtually gone, no one repairs, throws heals or ammo.
I don't know why we need this stupid cutscene during deployment, and for the love of god add more transport vehicles... no one wants to run 1000 miles to a damn objective
- 4 years ago@Hoak Agreed. Hence my previews post. I will ask for a refund. Never done that but its out of control really.

Yes, all the comments here -- spot on: cringy canny valley end of match taunt/brag/boast crap is like something out of a kiddie cartoon, the music is horrible and pales next to the epic atmospheric score in other BF games, the characters all look like a bunch of creepy bar flies not military professionals, actual game design is a hodge-podge of bad ideas from other games, and more poorly executed as well.
It's like EA tore though everything that defines a Battlefield game and said 'Battlefield in name only people!'. If they'd called the game anything else but Battlefield, priced it about 80% less, and were publishing a tiny indie team -- some of this might make sense. Which makes me wonder if this isn't 'woke' ESG money steering the agenda.
Yes, EA's misguided greed in trying to make more money buy appealing to virtually every game genre's audience, with BATTLEFIELD IP that has two decades of established game canon that consistently drew an enormous audience and sales, add their absolutely horrific, racist stereotypes in the approach to ESG that has been taken here -- makes this more of a train wreck simulator on every level than a game.
As well the duplicitous and dishonest marketing, equally misleading damage control, record setting bad ratings (second worst all time rating now on Steam and still going down, lowest rating on Metacritic etc.), and the gruesomely bad approach to ESG is going to come at enormous cost: returns and subscription cancellations are already setting records, and that will just get worse, new sales will tank, EA stock price is going to tank as well. What rational person would hang on to EA stock in this market with negative sentiment just getting worse, over a four day holiday weekend? Monday should be gruesome...
That all of this could so easily been avoided just by selling the game under some other title, and/or build a BATTLEFIELD game BATTLEFIELD game fans want, applying sound HONEST marketing rules of thumb, in marketing the unique and compelling genre defining BATTLEFIELD features and gameplay to the uninitiated, or under-exposed, and market this atrocity honestly for what ever it's supposed to be: Woke Train Wreck & Walking Simulator For The Gullible.
The good news is EA will get what they deserve: they're going to lose tens of millions, perhaps hundreds depending on how poorly their stock does after this gaff, they'll certainly get nominated for a third Golden Poo Award, and have a better than even chance of winning it again. Sadly everyone that got on the Clown Bus is going to get beat up too: jobs will be lost, money will be lost (like those that own the stock and have no idea how poorly run EA is, or those of us that were dumb enough to get on with-out a refund option. A truly terrible voyage to the bottom of the barrel...

Good luck, I was refused a refund for a game that I am unable to play. I stupidly preorder the gold edition to start playing early. I am unable to play a single game without crashing to desktop. EA HELP is unable to provide any assistance to resolve the issue. They have also refused a refund.

I just updated the OT post to contain some of the most frequently mentioned missing features and issues pots on Redit, the actual list I compiled was five times larger than what I posted, and even what I posted is apparently too big to fit in a single post (the bug list is ginormous...
The point is a lot that are newly in will enter the game with new player normalcy bias thinking they just can't find the feature that's actually missing because the game has changed, which is just not the case -- the vast majority of Battlefield's core features and design are completely absent this game, it's not you, it's just not there...
Some of this will be important to some Battlefield Fans and not others, but the obvious thing is there's so much wrong with the game it's clearly beyond affordable repair, and most of this will never be fixed, or is even impossible to fix because of design decisions that were made.
The best option, is to send the message loud and clear: cancel your EA subscription if you have one, or return the game if you can -- you'll be able to buy both after Christmas for a small fraction of what they cost now with the current returns and cancelations hemorrhage.

I friggin hate EA.

@jeffglotzer I don't, they're just a callous money machine, and we're the commodity... I'm pretty mad at myself for paying for this dreck though...
Well the update is out, and everything Battlefield 2042 just gets worse... It and EA are being panned everywhere for all the same things that are and remain Truly Horrible. Rather than add to the growing list of Truly Horrible, the objections to this game and terrible reviews can conceptually be summarized into these categories:
2042 Has Abandoned Virtually All Battlefield Design Canon
Missing more core Battlefield design and features than it carries forward, 2042 is not what people that throw down a lot of hard earned money thought they were paying for, it's a rude surprise to those that didn't have beta access as the marketing has been very duplicitous and deceptive.
It's Beyond A Bug Float
There are more features that don't work than do, more broken game code than indie games built by teen-agers from scratch. It warrants mention this comes from a company with over 9,000 employees, and revenue of over $5.4 Billion. With resources and means like this to bring to bare this isn't just embarrassing; on a mature game engine, with a mature development pipeline -- it's profoundly ridiculous.
Horrible, Obnoxious & Racist ESG Pandering
In what clearly has to have been the worst ESG advisory guidance (and/or attempt to follow it) in entertainment history to date; the characters are absolutely bottom of the barrel, hideous, racist stereotypes, and are the antithesis of anything aspirational -- this will end up being law-suit material.
EA Damage Control Is As Bad As Everything Else
Whether they're in a state of denial, or knew this would happen; EA is committing every gaff in Homer Simpson like fashion: hitting every, tree, rock and branch as they fall, roll and tumble down the face of the hill... Denial, ignoring, censoring, banning, and paying the shill force more money.
With the overwhelming majority of game media, from mainstream sources like Forbs to indie podcasts panning the game as: "horrible", "unplayable", and "shockingly bad" -- posting ample evidence of of their claims and reactions, a Meticritic Metascore to Userscore disparity that exceeds the last blowout that was demonstrated to be paid for fraud, two Golden Poo Awards and looking like they're aiming for a third with one of their biggest cash cows, and EA stock headed down -- just wait till Monday when markets open and all this is contemplated more widely before a four day US Holiday weekend...
If EA's stock tanks, and you own this steaming chunk of boring swill, don't anticipate the kind of follow-up and fixes we've seen in the past Battlefield games that at least paid the bills. The cost of just fixing the bugs alone will be enormous. With the unprecedented level of returns, EA Play subscription cancellations, and stock tanking -- if things continue on their current trajectory there won't be enough money for much of anything, and EA will need to distance itself from the embarrassment of this costly voyage to the bottom of the barrel...

Back in my day we had submarines and destroyers, and even a carrier you could pilot.. those were the true days of battlefield...
today we have a bunch of hipsters sprinting and sliding.. like children on ritalin.
- AJ_Clickz4 years agoSeasoned Hotshot
Yep, this game is truly terrible and it's not just the bugs that are ruining it.
The decisions made while developing this game are truly baffling, no one asked for specialists but we got them, breakthrough will always be a mess because it's 128 players funneling on two objectives, conquest will always be barren because of how big the maps are.
Don't even get me started on it being released with 22 weapons AND THEY COULDN'T EVEN BALANCE THAT.
It's shocking, how did they go from the previous titles to this. For this game to become somewhat a Battlefield game so many changes to the core game need to be made and let's be honest, it won't happen.
They've served us a pile of poop, no matter how many sparkles they may try to put on its it's still going to be a pile of poop.
Dice do us all a favour and remaster BF4 because you are so out of touch it's insulting to the Battlefield franchise.

@DerrickNZ Huh?

Im wondering what the sales number are like on the game. Has it been announced anywhere what the day 1 sales were?
- JOGAGATYA4 years agoSeasoned Ace
I hope they improve the gunplay and movement. Want it more fluid like BF5. I can live with the cosmetics and specialists and subpar graphics too. And please put servers back because I’ve been playing the same two Maps in the last two days. And I played about 10 hours.
Well someone will most likely be getting fired - as soon as baseline decisions are made that directly impact revenue and shareholders - heads will roll. I hope they can fix this game, perhaps it will perform a fantastic U turn - it has happened with games before, but the sales figures would be interesting. Revenue> project revenue and actual revenue within first 7 days.
