Abuse in text chat and policy

I have recently reported an user for abusive behavior in text chat.

What happened :

This person used the term autistic as a slur and I immediately pushed back on it.

Then I filed a report and labeled it accordingly.

I later received an email saying that no action was taken following my report.

This email detailed the policy and take good care of noting that the context is accounted for.

My issue with the response :

My main issue with this response from the moderation team is that, I believe, the fact that I pushed back in the team chat was taken into account and landed this report in the "No Action" bin. As calling people autistic in a derogatory manner should not be tolerated by the EA moderation team (I hope).

I firmly believe that this kind of abuse should be pushed back publicly and the person should be shamed for this. In my experience as a moderator for a BF4 server, this allowed for a better community, and a better playing experience.

My second issue with the email I received is that there is no appeal process, There should be a possibility to give a more detailed account of the issue and appeal the process.

First off, thank you for your efforts to help keep the community a friendly and welcoming place.

Taking the time to do what you can in that regard is absolutely appreciated, even if you don't always see the result you'd hoped.

On that particular note, here on AHQ we do not have direct visibility to see the content or context of a report and thus wouldn't be able to speak to why something was handled a certain way.

There is also not an appeals process regarding reports you've made yourself, though I do see where you're coming from here and we can absolutely pass along the feedback on both points you've made.

While this won't help for the prior report as you've mentioned no longer having the messages themselves, if you ever feel additional context may be required for a report please feel free to include any additional information in the EA Help webform option described here (other options): Report players for cheating, abuse, and harassment

That will make sure the team reviewing those reports has as much information as possible to correctly action these kinds of reports. Thanks once again!

@ugdpy im thinking there is more to the story and screenshots with names blurred out would be helpful.

Perhaps you should disable chat? If words cause that kind of harm to you you should protect yourself from them and leave nothing to chance.

I sadly did not save the text messages.
I do not intent to disable chat, this is not causing me harm. I push back on this kind of behavior because it generate a toxic environment.

@ugdpy It is a fps game. For me smack talk is a big part of playing. But i am older and i have pretty thick skin. When someone calls me a name i laugh and take it as a compliment.

Generally when someone calls me a name it is because i am getting the better of them in a game.

Just out of interest, what caused them to call you names (something caused it, that doesn't just happen)?

To be clear, I was not the party being injured here.
A community allowing theses kind of "smack talk" using autism as a slur is not one I wish to be part of.
This is not good for the game, it is not good for players and should not be tolerated.

I have to ask but was this a one-off instance for you? If so just let it go and move on and enjoy the game. Plus what is toxic to one player may not be toxic to another. How did you push back? Were others offended by the way you pushed back?

@ugdpy If two people i don't know are having a back and forth i stay out of it. I see it as none of my business and if i found that it bothered me i would just turn off chat

@ugdpy And I don't want to be part of a community that gets offended over 'micro aggressions'.

My advice, stop looking at the text chat. That's what I do but not for the same reasons.

@Tank2042Man Do you really think describing the team as "Autistic noobs" should be allowed ?

I will refer you to the rules of conducts :
"
Harass, threaten, bully, embarrass, spam or do anything else to another player or any EA employee or representative that is unwanted, such as repeatedly sending unwanted messages or making personal attacks or statements about race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated. We won't tolerate any unwanted conduct against any EA employee and representative because of their affiliation with EA in EA Services or anywhere else."

It's not about "Being offended" but building a community where everyone is feeling welcomed.
