Aim assist has only ever worked in close to mid range. I don't believe I've ever seen an aim assist function at sniper ranges.
BF2042 does have aim assist, but it is tuned poorly. The slowdown box is larger than the character model.

This is especially noticable for anyone using the default (low) sensivity and 100% slow down 'assist'. This issue alone has probably driven away a good number of players.
This issue also affects vertical recoil control. Sustained fire with something like the LCMG is quite difficult to control smoothly. A slight pull down on the stick is mostly filtered out by the slowdown assist. You can't keep up with the vertical recoil so you add more input. Eventually you add enough vertical input that the crosshairs 'snap' through the assist. Your previously excessive input now gets fully registered and you are now aimung below the target. This nothing, nothing, nothing, EVERYTHING approach to vertical recoil control is frustrating.
