We have only the roadmap for year one, but battle passes are definitely coming to Battlefield 2042, as EA and other game producers have utilized in recent years to support an evolving game platform and related commercial payment model. DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will have its own version of a battle pass system, so not directly lifted/shifted from one of their other game franchises, but it will feature the free and paid tracks. As we have started to see across this industry then the Battlefield 2042 battle pass model will allow non-owners of the pass to access all meaningful gameplay content. The model also insures that all future maps and modes will remain free for all players!
DICE appears much more organized and planned this time, and have already substantial details on the game’s post-launch support. So we know that year one will unfold over four 'seasons'.
Each of these seasons will add a new chapter to the multiplayer’s evolving story, and we will see a new BF2042 Specialist added in each season as we proceed.
We will also see new locations being added in each year of the game's live service. We only heard details about the Specialists for this, and not on the plans for the next maps/modes to be added later. So we should expect a new battle pass is required for every new season that we want to join/access. It will merely contain a load of cosmetic content that you can use in the game.
We do not know for certain if the cosmetics for your customization options are all unilateral, aka applicable for all the characters/specialists in the game. But expect that we soon will know more about this, as in July we will get demoed the in-game features, including soldier weapon loadout options, camos etc.
