While I prefer manual replenishment for the tactical layer it brings not to mention putting vehicles and infantry in parity when it comes to ammo replen style, the auto replenishment system is still workable. It all comes down to how the numbers are adjusted. If they are wisely implemented then you'll see balanced gameplay. If they are haphazardly and biased then well...
A lot of people praise BF4 as the best BF and while it probably is the best in the franchise it is still not a great game - certainly not as great as it could have been. The scenarios that you describe like frequent 160 KD ratio are an embarrassment. It was perhaps understandable at launch, but to leave it uncorrected till this day is an impious affront to players who deserved better. For example, a lot of people blamed AH dominance on FLIR but the real culprits are
- The 30mm auto cannon that had ridiculous splash damage and blast radius
- The TV Missile which relegated AGM and Heatseekers obsolete
- Total immunity from vehicle based missiles with below radar
I don't want to go into too much detail here as I have more comprehensive post I am preparing but suffice to say that vehicle vs vehicle and vehicle vs infantry balance are fairly complex topics that involve a lot of different layers to manage. It's not terribly difficult to achieve fairness in a model, but it is a somewhat tedious task that is made more difficult by people who overemphasize and overvalue direct and guided weapons over homing and ignore the tactical aspect of BF. Hopefully Portal will give us a lot of options for tweaking vehicle parameters so we can experiment and refine the experience.
@rainkloudyeah this is less an issue of ammo and more of certain BF3/4 vehicles like the helicopters and stealth jets being too good at countering/avoiding their ground-based counters.

After that attack helis just ceiling camp which thankfully doesn't happen in later games like BF4. Prefer BF3 but BF4 did a few things better.

Jets in BF3 are OP but at least not as OP as back in BF2 (trying desperately to look for a positive point) ;-)
