As a member of an online gaming community (clan), we always rented a minimum of two servers, usually 4. BC2, BF3 and 4, ATF Clan always rented severs and had no problems getting donations to pay for those servers. I also played on other clan severs, TBG, AOD, etc. Rented servers had admins usually, who could kick cheaters or flamers. They could move people for balance (sometimes involuntarily lol), they could manage the game and make it a fun experience for the wide audience of gamers who flocked to their sites. It also made the online communities relevant, and helped them grow. Playing on uncontrolled public servers with constant rolls, inflammatory and toxic chats, hackers, etc was far less fun. I’d pick a clan server over a pub server all day long as I knew I’d have more fun with less hassle. Those were the days.

It was a wholly different experience back then wasn't it, it's hard to envisage ever getting back to those days. !
